Amazon has patented a technology that will allow users to unlock their smartphone by recognizing the shape of their ear. The would scan your ear with a phone’s front-facing camera, unlocking it as you hold the device to the side of your face when answering a call. Apparently, human ears are also unique similar to an individuals fingerprints. Along with unlocking the handset, the technology could also be used to adjust speaker volume by determining the distance between the phone and the user’s ear.

Using an ear as a medium to unlock a device especially at the time of receiving a call does not offer any great benefit as Android and iOS devices allow you to receive a call without unlocking the device. Amazon might use this technology to its future Fire phone technology.
