Apple has announced HomePod mini 2, the next generation of its compact smart speaker. HomePod mini 2 features Apple’s S10 chip and supports HomePod software 27.2. It is available in pink, green, blue, white and midnight. Siri AI support will arrive through a future software update.
Features: Apple HomePod mini 2
Siri AI
HomePod mini 2 uses a new architecture based on the latest generation of Apple Foundation Models to support Siri AI. The update will introduce personal context understanding, broader world knowledge, more conversational responses, improved music discovery and support for additional apps.
When paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, HomePod mini can recognise up to six household members by their voices and securely connect to their devices across apps such as Messages and timers, while playing their favourite music.
Siri AI can use personal context across a user’s iPhone and iPad apps to help with tasks such as:
- Finding a song recommended by a friend in a text message.
- Setting a reminder linked to a calendar event or location.
- Locating a recipe in an email.
- Adding ingredients to a grocery list.
It can also answer questions on a wide range of topics using up-to-date information from the web and support back-and-forth conversations. Once enabled on a supported HomePod mini 2, Siri AI’s broader world knowledge, conversational capabilities and improved music discovery will also be available to users without an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad.
Audio and Sound Glow
HomePod mini 2 delivers 360-degree sound. Its computational audio system analyses music in real time to optimise dynamic range, loudness and acoustic performance. The speaker supports the following configurations:
- Single speaker: Audio playback through one speaker.
- Stereo pair: Two speakers configured for stereo playback.
- Multiroom audio: Playback across multiple rooms.
- Four-speaker surround sound: Four HomePod mini 2 speakers paired with the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K.
For surround sound, the system recognises each speaker’s position in the room and automatically calibrates audio timing and levels to suit the space. HomePod mini 2 can also serve as a speaker for Mac during movies, gaming, FaceTime and video calls.
Sound Glow adds lighting effects that respond to music playback. The top of the speaker glows and pulses in response to bass and treble. Album artwork displayed in Now Playing determines the colours of the lighting effects, while selected soundscapes, such as rain, trigger corresponding animations.
Smart home controls and safety
HomePod mini 2 lets users control compatible smart home accessories through voice commands. The Home app supports automations and scenes for managing multiple accessories together. As a home hub, the speaker also allows users to control compatible accessories remotely through the Home app on an iPhone.
Examples of supported actions include locking the front door, closing the garage when leaving home, lowering blinds, adjusting the thermostat and turning off lights at bedtime.
Additional features include:
- Sound Recognition: Detects smoke or carbon monoxide alarms and immediately sends a notification to the user’s iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.
- Remote check-ins: Allows users to listen and talk to someone at home through HomePod mini using the Home app.
- Doorbell announcements: Works with compatible smart home accessories, including Apple Home Collection video doorbells and cameras, to announce who is at the door using Face Recognition.
Privacy and security
Siri AI requests can be processed on the device or through Private Cloud Compute, which extends Apple’s device privacy approach to cloud processing. Apple states that data processed through Private Cloud Compute is not stored or made accessible to Apple or other parties.
Environmental features
HomePod mini 2 uses 100% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets. Apple-designed printed circuit boards contain the following recycled materials:
- 100% recycled copper.
- 100% recycled gold plating.
- 100% recycled tin solder.
The speaker also meets Apple’s energy-efficiency and safe-chemistry standards. Its paper packaging is 100% fibre-based and designed to be recycled, supporting Apple’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality across its entire footprint by 2030.
