Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 Platform, a hardware foundation intended to expand the capabilities of audio wearables through enhanced on-device processing, dedicated connectivity, and contextual AI features.
On-Device AI and Hardware Efficiency
The platform delivers up to two times greater on-device AI capability compared to its predecessor, allowing multiple intelligent workloads to operate concurrently. It incorporates an embedded neural processing unit (eNPU) capable of up to 128 GOPS of AI acceleration, supported by the Qualcomm Kymera multi-core audio architecture.
Architectural improvements provide up to 40% lower power consumption and a 30% reduction in platform footprint relative to the previous generation. The architecture integrates an Arm Cortex-M55 applications processor, an Arm Cortex-M55 main DSP, two Hi-Fi 5 audio DSPs, and a dedicated Hi-Fi 3 low-latency DSP. These efficiencies are aimed at enabling faster, always-available personal AI features, including use in camera-equipped form factors designed to evaluate environmental context rather than capture media.
Connectivity and Cloud Integration
Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 integrates micro-power Wi-Fi 6E operating across 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands, offering up to an 86 Mbps PHY rate. This setup provides direct-to-cloud connectivity without requiring routing through a smartphone.
Through this independent connectivity, the platform supports the Snapdragon Sound Apps & Agents ecosystem, enabling direct interaction with cloud-based AI assistants, translation tools, and productivity services. Wireless coverage is supplemented by Bluetooth Classic, Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) Audio, and Qualcomm Expanded Personal Area Network (XPAN) technology, which extends audio streaming coverage beyond standard Bluetooth range.
Audio Processing and Acoustic Features
The platform incorporates several audio-specific processing technologies:
- Qualcomm aptX Lossless: Supports bit-for-bit, high-fidelity wireless music streaming.
- 5th Generation Qualcomm Adaptive ANC: Uses AI-driven curation and real-time environmental awareness to modify active noise cancellation dynamically.
- Qualcomm cVc Technology: Pairs with multi-microphone arrays to isolate speech and suppress ambient noise during voice calls and virtual assistant queries.
- Snapdragon Audio Sense Solution: Employs microphone algorithms to enhance vocal pickup and environmental hearing for AI responsiveness.
Form Factors and Ecosystem
Qualcomm is positioning the platform across several device categories, including wireless earbuds, premium headphones, open-ear devices, audio glasses, hearing devices, and multimodal wearables.
To shorten development timelines for device makers, Qualcomm is supplying reference designs for rapid prototyping and validation. During the announcement, audio manufacturer Cleer showcased an early concept combining audio, vision, and AI processing, demonstrating how the platform can be applied in emerging multimodal wearable categories
