Qualcomm introduces Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Extreme Gen 6 2nm SoCs: up to 5GHz Oryon CPU, up to 35% faster NPU

Qualcomm has officially announced its latest premium mobile lineup, introducing the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 Mobile Platform (part number SM8975) alongside the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Mobile Platform (part number SM8950).

Both system-on-chips (SoCs) are manufactured on a 2nm process technology and are engineered to power forthcoming flagship Android smartphones from global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

Core Architecture and Performance Benchmarks

Both platforms share an architectural foundation utilizing Qualcomm’s custom 64-bit Oryon CPU, an updated Adreno GPU subsystem, and a reengineered Hexagon Neural Processing Unit (NPU).

The Oryon CPU configuration on both SoCs features two Prime cores clocked at up to 5.0 GHz and six Performance cores reaching up to 4.0 GHz, backed by 16 MB of Qualcomm Oryon Flex Cache. Memory support extends up to 24 GB of LP-DDR5x/6 at up to 5,300 MHz, paired with UFS 5.0 storage compatibility.

When measured against the prior-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5:

  • Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6: Delivers a 10% gain in CPU performance with a 37% improvement in CPU power efficiency. The GPU provides a 35% uplift in performance alongside a 40% reduction in power consumption, while the NPU registers a 14% performance boost with a 20% improvement in AI performance-per-watt.
  • Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6: Offers a 13% increase in CPU performance and matching 37% CPU efficiency gains. Graphics performance increases by 44% with a 40% improvement in GPU power efficiency. Its NPU achieves a 35% performance improvement and a 33% increase in AI performance-per-watt, supported by 50% larger shared memory.
On-Device Intelligence and Gaming Capabilities

The platforms integrate an enhanced Qualcomm AI Engine designed for agentic, proactive workflows. Utilizing the low-power Qualcomm Sensing Hub—equipped with dual Micro NPUs and dual Always-Sensing ISPs—the architecture allows on-device assistants to continuously analyze contextual data and coordinate multi-app tasks without persistent user prompting. Precision support spans INT2 through FP16 formats, aided by a new Element Accelerator.

For graphics and gaming, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 introduces Qualcomm Adreno Neural Fusion, which uses dedicated Adreno matrix cores to offload rendering workloads and improve frame delivery. It also incorporates an 18 MB Adreno High-Performance Memory architecture, yielding up to 12% power savings. Both platforms support Unreal Engine 5 features, including Lumen Global Illumination, Nanite Virtualized Geometry, and real-time hardware-accelerated ray tracing, with the Extreme tier adding MegaLights support. Display capabilities accommodate internal panels up to 4K+ at 120 Hz or QHD+ at 240 Hz.

Imaging and Multimedia

Both chipsets feature the Qualcomm Spectra Image Signal Processor with triple 20-bit AI-ISPs, supporting single sensors up to 320 MP (or up to 108 MP with Zero Shutter Lag) and triple-camera arrays up to 64 MP. Camera pipelines incorporate Intelligent Pixel Control, real-time 3D-LUT color mapping via the Elite Color Engine, and motion intelligence stabilization.

Video capabilities diverge slightly at the high end:

  • The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 supports 8K video capture at 30 FPS and 4K slow-motion recording at 120 FPS.
  • The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 enables 8K video capture at up to 60 FPS, 4K super slow motion at up to 240 FPS, and hardware support for the Advanced Professional Video (APV) recording codec.

Audio processing across both platforms is handled by the Snapdragon Sound Technology Suite, incorporating AI Voice Bubble for background noise isolation, post-capture AI audio separation, and low-latency spatial audio rendering with head tracking.

Connectivity and Standards

Wireless connectivity across the lineup is anchored by the Qualcomm X105 5G Modem-RF System and the FastConnect 8800 Mobile Connectivity System.

The X105 modem is 3GPP Release 19-ready, supporting 5G Advanced across mmWave and sub-6 GHz spectrums, with peak downlink rates reaching up to 14.8 Gbps and uplinks up to 4.2 Gbps. It integrates a 6-antenna (6Rx) configuration, a 6nm transceiver consuming 30% less power, and integrated Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) capabilities supporting both NB-NTN and NR-NTN satellite communications.

The FastConnect 8800 subsystem introduces a 4×4 Wi-Fi architecture compatible with Wi-Fi 8 (802.11bn) alongside Wi-Fi 7/6 standards, delivering theoretical peak speeds up to 11.6 Gbps Additional connectivity standards include Bluetooth 6.0 with High Data Throughput (HDT), Channel Sounding, Ultra-Wideband (UWB), and Thread 1.4.

Availability

Commercial devices utilizing both the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 are scheduled to debut from major Android smartphone manufacturers in upcoming product cycles, said Qualcomm.

At the event, Xiaomi confirmed that the Xiaomi 18 Pro series that will be introduced in China later today will be the first phone to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series chips.

After teasers, motorola has confirmed the launch of the Singnature 27 smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 SoC later this year.
