Canon today announced the EOS R8 Mark II, a compact and lightweight 24.2-megapixel full-frame mirrorless camera and the successor to the EOS R8. The EOS R8 Mark II measures approximately 131.4 x 90.0 x 79.7mm and weighs approximately 546g.
Canon says it is its smallest and lightest full-frame mirrorless camera with In-Body IS. Its design reinterprets Canon’s pentaprism form with linear elements and curves, while retaining a comfortable grip and ergonomic design.
Key design and handling features include:
- Multi-controller, or joystick, for autofocus control while keeping the eye on the viewfinder; the EOS R8 Mark II is the first EOS R series full-frame camera of its class to feature it
- Extension Grip EG-E2, sold separately, with dial-based attachment and detachment
- Extension Grip EG-E2 support for tripod mounting and battery changing
The 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor has a light-gathering surface approximately 2.5 times that of an APS-C sensor. Canon says it captures more information with less image noise in low-light conditions, improving image quality, low-light performance and AF performance.
The sensor also provides a wider field of view at the same focal length compared with an APS-C sensor, supporting ultra-wide-angle shooting and background and foreground bokeh.
Imaging and autofocus features include:
- Built-in 5-axis In-Body IS for correcting blurring caused by hand movement at slower shutter speeds
- Coordinated Control IS with compatible RF lenses, providing an image stabilisation effect equivalent to up to 7.5 stops at the centre and 7.0 stops at the edges
- Deep learning-based Dual Pixel CMOS AF II
- Pre-Continuous Shooting
- Electronic shutter continuous shooting at up to 40fps
- Register People Priority mode for autofocus tracking of specific preregistered people, including in crowded scenes
The EOS R8 Mark II adds two new photo and video Colour Filters, “NegativeFilmtone” and “PositiveFilmtone,” bringing the total to 16. Colour Filter strength can also be adjusted. Handheld Night Scene Mode for stills adds four colour settings:
- Blue
- Black & Orange
- Pink
- Green
The interval timer adds exposure smoothing, timer priority and delayed start options for time-lapse movies. Creative AUTO provides creative assistance through an intuitive interface, a first for an EOS full-frame camera.
For movie shooting, the “Background Blur” Creative Assist interface allows users to set a shortcut to automatically apply a preconfigured blur and speed level. The camera also includes Slow & Fast Motion Movie mode and Cinema View, which are found in recent EOS R-series cameras such as the EOS R50 V.
Video capabilities include:
- 6K-oversampled 4K 60p video
- Up to Full HD 180p video with audio
- Canon Log 3
- Custom Picture function from the Cinema EOS lineup

- Advanced picture control parameter adjustments
- Four wired and wireless livestreaming options
- Multi-angle livestreaming through the Live Switcher Mobile app
For VR content creation, the EOS R8 Mark II is compatible with full-frame and APS-C VR lenses and supports the new VR Clear Mode, which optimises contrast and clarity when viewing output on VR goggles, without requiring post-editing.
Still photos can also be converted to 3D using the new Dual Pixel 3D Converter software, which uses distance information from Canon’s sensor-based Dual Pixel CMOS AF system to create a 3D model of a captured scene.

- Tripod Grip HG-1000TBR
- Bluetooth Remote Controller BR-E2, bundled with the Tripod Grip HG-1000TBR
