GrapheneOS, an open-source version of Android focused on security and privacy, has detailed plans to officially support Motorola smartphones. Support will initially target a regular, non-folding Motorola flagship, followed by the Motorola Razr Fold and Razr Ultra foldables. More affordable models could be supported later if they meet the project’s requirements.
In a Mastodon thread, the GrapheneOS Foundation said the 2026 Motorola Signature, Razr Fold and Razr Ultra are close to meeting its requirements but lack mature hardware memory tagging, adequate secure-element integration and other features planned for 2027. The next-generation Snapdragon platform is expected to provide more mature memory tagging and improved secure-element support.
The supported Motorola devices are expected to include:
- Seven years of software updates
- Linux 6.18 LTS initially
- Reset-attack protection for firmware boot modes
- Hardware memory tagging and USB-C port protection
- Improved secure-element support
Razr foldables and affordable models
GrapheneOS plans to support the Razr Fold and Razr Ultra alongside the regular Motorola flagship. The Razr Ultra would be the project’s first vertically folding flip phone, while GrapheneOS already supports the original Pixel Fold, Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
Motorola is also working closely with GrapheneOS on the port. The company will provide the required firmware and drivers, while Motorola and Qualcomm will address issues with those components. This work will help bring GrapheneOS to the planned Motorola devices.
The initial focus is on flagship hardware, but more affordable Motorola phones could follow later. These devices would need better security features from Qualcomm’s lower-cost chipsets and seven years of software support from Motorola. The Moto G Stylus ($499.99), for example, currently offers two major Android OS upgrades and three years of security updates.
Pixel 11 support continues
GrapheneOS will continue supporting Google Pixel phones and plans to add support for the Pixel 11 series, including the Pixel 11 Pro Fold. However, the Foundation said Pixel devices have become harder to support after Android 16 removed Pixel support from the Android Open Source Project.
GrapheneOS said it previously added support for newly launched Pixel devices in under 24 hours after receiving the hardware and source code. It now expects Pixel 11 support could take months because of changes to the Pixel development and source-code process.
Availability
The 2026 Razr Fold and Razr Ultra are available in the US, while the 2026 Motorola Signature is not. GrapheneOS said it hopes the next-generation models will also be available in the US.
