Microsoft has announced a limited-time test of an ad-supported game streaming option for Xbox Insiders. During the test, eligible Xbox Insiders with an Xbox account can stream select games they own from their library for free by watching ads before each session.
During the test:
- Ads are shown before each streaming session begins.
- The gameplay experience remains unchanged.
- The feature is optional, and players can choose other ways to play at any time.
Microsoft said players can stream games using devices they already own. Cloud streaming also enables Xbox One owners to play newer Xbox Series X|S games without purchasing new hardware. The company said this could improve access in regions where consoles are harder to find or less affordable.
Microsoft said the ad-supported streaming test follows these principles:
- Ads will not interrupt gameplay.
- Advertisements will be clearly identified.
- Ads will meet the same quality standards as its content.
- Ads will be designed to match player expectations on each platform.
Microsoft said the test explores another way to provide lower-cost access to cloud gaming while expanding access to more players. The company will use feedback from Xbox Insiders to refine the experience before considering a wider rollout.
Availability and feedback
The limited-time test is available to eligible Xbox Insiders with an Xbox account across supported devices and regions, with streaming sessions limited to one hour. Xbox Insiders can share feedback through Xbox Player Voice or get support through the Xbox Insider subreddit.
