LG establishes Robotics Business Center to accelerate physical AI commercialization

LG Electronics (LG) has announced the establishment of a new Robotics Business Center, an organizational realignment designed to consolidate its robotics commercialization capabilities.

Reporting directly to CEO Lyu Jae-cheol, the center will integrate business development, supply chain management, and manufacturing operations to accelerate growth in what the company identifies as a key future business sector.

Organizational Realignment and Leadership

Effective July 1, 2026, the Robotics Business Center was formed during an off-cycle organizational restructuring. Occurring four months ahead of LG’s typical annual realignment schedule, the timing underscores the company’s strategic focus on robotics driven by Physical AI.

The center functions as an end-to-end business unit covering development, sales, and operations. It is led by Song Si-yong, who previously held key leadership positions at LG’s Production Engineering Research Institute.

Data Infrastructure and the Robot Foundation Model

To support robot training and next-generation robotics capabilities, the center is launching a dedicated data factory organization. High-quality operational data gathered by this unit will be utilized to advance LG’s Robot Foundation Model (RFM).

As part of this data-acquisition strategy, LG is currently constructing a large-scale data factory at its Yangjae R&D Campus in Seoul. Operations at the facility are scheduled to begin before the end of the year.

Governance and Ecosystem Integration

The new governance structure is intended to establish an agile decision-making framework to improve cost competitiveness, internal technology development, and overall strategy execution.

Operating as a self-contained business unit, the center is positioned to leverage broader corporate resources under a “One LG Solution.” This structure integrates expertise from affiliates such as LG CNS and LG AI Research while also being intended to streamline strategic partnerships with global technology companies.

Three-Pillar Strategy for Market Expansion

LG is deploying a three-pillar strategy targeting industrial, commercial, and residential sectors:

  • Residential: Advancing LG’s expanding portfolio of home robots.
  • Commercial: Utilizing the commercial robotics expertise of Bear Robotics.
  • Industrial: Leveraging the industrial robotics capabilities of Robostar.

LG has designated 2026 as the inaugural year of its robotics business expansion, with the goal of becoming a prominent Physical AI solution provider. To support commercialization in real-world environments, the company plans to combine finished robot products, data-generation capabilities, and core components with the broader LG Group ecosystem.

Furthermore, LG is preparing to initiate domestic production of actuators, drawing on over 60 years of internal motor technology expertise to support its future supply chain.
