OPPO India details new LUMO Lab Imaging initiatives ahead of Find X9s and X9 Ultra launch

OPPO India has outlined the progress of its India-exclusive imaging project, LUMO Lab, ahead of the scheduled launch of its new Find X9 series smartphones on May 21, 2026. The initiative focuses on tailoring smartphone camera technology specifically for the Indian market, directly influencing the imaging capabilities of the upcoming Find X9 Ultra and Find X9s devices.

Collaborative Field Testing

Initiated in November 2025, LUMO Lab facilitated collaborations between OPPO’s global imaging engineers and local photographers, including Joseph Radhik and Ashik Aseem. The project involved over 160 photographers, creators, and users in field tests and photowalks across cities such as Jaipur, Delhi, and Mumbai.

These exercises were designed to test the cameras in real-world scenarios, addressing specific imaging challenges such as accurately capturing the textures of traditional attire and balancing human subjects against high-contrast backgrounds.

Key Areas of Imaging Focus

According to the company, the feedback gathered from these sessions directly influenced the camera tuning for the Find X9 series. The research was divided into three primary phases:

  • Authentic Indian Skin Tones: Engineers adjusted color balance and texture rendering to portray a diverse range of Indian skin tones naturally across varying lighting conditions.
  • Festival Color Tuning: Tested during dynamic events like Holi, this phase focused on capturing vibrant colors and motion accurately, aiming to avoid artificial over-saturation.
  • People and Architecture Harmony: The final phase concentrated on optimizing exposure and white balance to capture both human subjects and complex architectural backgrounds with equal clarity and depth.
Find X9 Series Technology

The imaging hardware and software on the new devices are anchored by the LUMO Image Engine and developed in partnership with camera manufacturer Hasselblad.

The upcoming Find X9 series will feature two distinct models tailored to different user demographics. The Find X9 Ultra is positioned for professional creators, featuring a multi-focal camera system, an advanced telephoto architecture, and 16-bit HDR capabilities for extensive image control.

Conversely, the Find X9s is aimed at lifestyle users, utilizing the same underlying color science and image engine in a format designed for point-and-shoot ease and quick sharing.

Simon Liu, Director of Imaging Technology at OPPO, said:

Imaging in India is far more complex than most global markets because of extreme light, diverse skin tones, saturated cultural colours, and expressive architecture. Through LUMO Lab, we combine engineering precision with local artistic insight, we don’t just take photos, we make images feel truly Indian.
