X implements new daily limits on posts, replies for free/unverified accounts

Social media platforms routinely implement technical constraints to maintain system stability. Now X (formerly Twitter) has introduced specific limits to user account actions to ensure the platform remains reliable and functional for the global user base.

The Purpose of Action Limits

The primary function of account limits on X is to alleviate strain on the platform’s backend infrastructure. By capping the frequency and volume of specific actions, X can significantly reduce system downtime and minimize the occurrence of error pages. These boundaries are implemented strictly for the sake of platform reliability and performance.

Current Technical Limits

X enforces limits across various account functions. These limits apply cumulatively across all devices and platforms, including web browsers, mobile applications, and third-party API clients.

Account Action Technical Limit Additional Details
Direct Messages 500 per day Applies to the total number of messages sent.
Posts (Unverified) 50 original / 200 replies per day Limits are further broken down into smaller semi-hourly intervals.
Posts (Overall) 2,400 per day The maximum platform limit, also distributed across semi-hourly intervals.
Email Changes 4 per hour Restricts how often the account’s registered email can be updated.
Following (Daily) 400 per day This is a technical ceiling. Separate rules prohibiting aggressive following behavior still apply.
Following (Total) 5,000 accounts Once reached, further follow attempts are restricted by account-specific follow-to-follower ratios.
API and Third-Party Applications

API requests generated by third-party applications are tracked against an hourly API limit. Users who connect their X account to multiple third-party services will deplete their hourly API allowance more rapidly.

Temporary Reductions

During periods of exceptionally heavy site traffic, X may temporarily reduce these standard limits to maintain site stability. When this occurs, updates are typically posted on the official X status site.

Reaching an Account Limit

When a user reaches a technical limit, X will display an error message specifying which specific threshold has been exceeded.

Because most of these restrictions—such as direct messages, posts, email changes, and API requests—are time-based, the restriction is not permanent. Users simply need to wait for the designated time period to elapse before attempting the action again. For example, if a user hits the semi-hourly or daily post limit, full functionality will be restored after a few hours once the current limit period has reset.
