Google Chrome rolls out a new option on Android allowing users to choose between sharing approximate or precise location with websites. The feature is designed to give users more control over their location data while keeping location-based web functionality fully usable.
Location sharing control
Chrome on Android now allows users to share an approximate location instead of precise GPS-level data when a website requests access. This provides a general area rather than exact coordinates, depending on the user’s choice.
Use of precise location
Precise location is still supported when required for services that depend on accuracy, including:
- Placing delivery orders
- Finding nearby ATMs or offices
- Using navigation services
For other use cases such as local weather and news, approximate location is typically sufficient.
Developer APIs and guidelines
Google is introducing new web APIs that allow developers to request either approximate or precise location data based on their requirements. Developers are also encouraged to request precise location only when it is essential for core functionality.
Availability
The feature is rolling out first on Chrome for Android. It will expand to desktop in the coming months, along with new APIs that support both approximate and precise location requests.
