The Union Cabinet has approved two new semiconductor projects under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), marking the establishment of the country’s first commercial Mini/Micro-LED display facility based on Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology, alongside a new semiconductor packaging plant.
Both facilities will be located in Gujarat, representing a combined investment of approximately Rs 3,936 crore and the anticipated creation of 2,230 skilled jobs.
Project Details
Crystal Matrix Limited (CML) CML is slated to build an integrated facility for compound semiconductor fabrication and Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) in Dholera, Gujarat.
- Core Focus: Manufacturing Mini/Micro-LED display modules and providing GaN foundry services, including epitaxy on 6-inch wafers.
- Production Capacity: 72,000 square meters of Mini/Micro-LED Display Panels and 24,000 sets of RGB Mini-Micro-LED GaN Epitaxy Wafers annually.
- Target Applications: Large displays (TVs and commercial signages), medium displays (tablets, smartphones, and in-car systems), and micro-displays (Extended Reality glasses and smartwatches).
Suchi Semicon Private Limited (SSPL) SSPL will establish an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Surat, Gujarat.
- Core Focus: Manufacturing discrete semiconductors.
- Production Capacity: 1,033.20 million chips per annum.
- Target Applications: Power electronics, analog ICs, and industrial systems utilized in the automotive, industrial automation, and consumer electronics sectors.
Broader Ecosystem Impact
With these latest approvals, the total number of manufacturing projects sanctioned under the ISM has reached 12, bringing cumulative investments in the sector to approximately Rs 1.64 lakh crore.
These manufacturing initiatives run parallel to ongoing government support for chip design infrastructure, which currently provides resources to 315 academic institutions and 104 startups across the country.
According to the government, momentum is continuing for the ten previously approved ISM projects, which are currently in various stages of execution. Two facilities have already commenced commercial shipments from India, with an additional two expected to begin commercial shipments in the near future.
