HUAWEI Pura X Max with 7.7″ horizontally foldable inner and 5.4″ outer 120Hz LTPO OLED screens announced

HUAWEI has introduced the Pura X Max, the industry’s first horizontally foldable phone, as it had promised.

Display and Geometric Design

The Huawei Pura X Max introduces a paper-like aspect ratio of approximately 2:1 for both its inner and outer displays, designed to provide a consistent visual experience when transitioning between the two screens.

  • Outer Screen: A 5.4-inch display featuring a peak brightness of 3500 nits (at 20% APL) and a 1-120Hz LTPO adaptive refresh rate.
  • Inner Screen: A larger 7.7-inch display with a peak brightness of 3000 nits (at 20% APL) and the same 1-120Hz LTPO adaptive refresh rate.

Aesthetically, the phone adopts a geometric design intended to project a modern style. The camera deco area features a ceramic bezel that highlights a luminous texture. The device is available in five distinct colors: Midnight Black, Zero White, Interstellar Blue, Olive Gold, and Vibrant Orange.

Performance and Durability

Under the hood, the entire Huawei Pura X Max series is powered by the Kirin 9030 Pro chip. The hardware is optimized to support real-time ray tracing hardware acceleration, catering to high-performance tasks and advanced graphics.

The physical build incorporates several structural upgrades to enhance longevity and resilience:

  • Basalt Waterdrop Hinge: This newly designed hinge increases available screen space by 16% and improves drop resistance by 33%.
  • Inner Screen Durability: The folding display utilizes a triple composite ultra-tough layer. This includes UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass), a carbon fiber support layer, and an ultra-high molecular weight buffer layer. According to Huawei, this combination increases impact resistance by 50% and compression resistance by 20%.
Camera System

Marketed by the manufacturer as the “pinnacle of flagship foldable imaging,” the Pura X Max features a comprehensive rear camera array designed for versatility:

  • 50MP Ultra-Zoom Main Camera
  • 50MP Periscope Telephoto Lens (featuring a large aperture)
  • 12.5MP Ultra-Wide-Angle Camera
  • Second-Generation multi-spectral channel red maple primary color camera

The camera system is supported by Huawei’s XMAGE intelligent shooting software, alongside features for portrait retouching and 3D dynamic photos.

Software, AI, and Integration

The Pura X Max runs on a brand-new “Max version” of HarmonyOS 6 and the HarmonyOS 6.1 system, marking the debut of several software and AI tools. Notably, it is the first smartphone to feature Huawei’s proprietary “Born to Draw” application.

AI Capabilities: The device integrates the newly upgraded Xiaoyi Smart Brain and the industry’s first companion AI solution, the Xiaoyi Companion AI. HUAWEI has partnered with numerous third-party applications to integrate this AI, including Amap, Zhihu, Didi Chuxing, Baidu Maps, DingTalk, Baidu, and Xuexitong.

Within HarmonyOS 6.1, the smart assistant supports a wide suite of productivity and organizational tool.

M-Pen 3 Mini Stylus

To complement the foldable screen and drawing applications, Huawei has introduced the M-Pen 3 Mini stylus accessory.

Key features of the M-Pen 3 Mini include:

  • An air mouse button and a dedicated writing button.
  • Support for air gestures and a scroll wheel menu.
  • An integrated microphone for omnidirectional sound pickup.
  • A smart button designed for instantly activating the Xiaoyi AI assistant.
  • Design elements matching the HarmonyOS Star Ring aesthetic.
