YouTube expands shopping affiliate program to creators with 500 subscribers

YouTube has announced a significant expansion to its Shopping affiliate program, substantially lowering the barrier to entry for content creators. The platform is now opening the program to a wider range of participants within the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).

Expanded Eligibility Requirements

Previously restricted to channels with a larger following, the updated policy allows creators to join the affiliate program if they meet the following criteria:

  • Are currently enrolled in the YouTube Partner Program.
  • Have a minimum of 500 subscribers.
  • Meet all other standard YouTube eligibility guidelines.
Program Functionality

The expanded program permits eligible creators to earn commissions by tagging products from various brands directly within their content. This tagging functionality is integrated across YouTube’s primary video formats, including:

  • Standard Video-On-Demand (VOD)
  • YouTube Shorts
  • Live streams

From the viewer’s perspective, the shopping experience is designed to be fully integrated. Audiences can view and purchase tagged products seamlessly, regardless of whether they are watching on a mobile device or a living room smart TV.

Platform Objectives

By lowering the subscriber threshold, YouTube aims to provide creators with the opportunity to diversify their revenue streams and earn commissions at an earlier stage in their channel’s growth.

Beyond direct monetization, the platform notes that the shopping feature is intended to foster community engagement. By acting as guides and recommending products to their audience, creators have the opportunity to build trust and strengthen relationships with their viewers through curated shopping experiences.
