YouTube Premium Lite Background Play and Downloads starts rolling out in India

YouTube has announced an update to its Premium Lite subscription service, introducing two major features: Background Play and video downloads. The rollout has officially commenced and is expected to reach all Premium Lite subscribers in India over the coming weeks after the feature was introduced last month.

With this update, the Premium Lite tier will support the following capabilities for most videos on the platform:

  • Ad-Free Viewing: An uninterrupted viewing experience across the majority of standard video content.
  • Offline Downloads: The ability to save videos directly to a device for viewing without an active internet connection.
  • Background Play: The option to continue listening to a video’s audio while navigating across other applications or when the device’s screen is locked.
Background and Context

The decision to enhance the Premium Lite tier stems from user feedback gathered after YouTube expanded its pilot program to additional markets last year. According to the company, subscribers actively requested the inclusion of offline viewing and background playback, prompting YouTube to integrate these features into the service to better meet consumer demands.

Premium Lite vs. Standard Premium

While Premium Lite is gaining these enhanced features, YouTube clarified the ongoing distinction between its subscription tiers. The Premium Lite plan applies these benefits to most video content, but restrictions remain regarding music.

For users seeking an entirely ad-free experience across all videos—specifically including official music content and full access to the standalone YouTube Music Premium service—the standard YouTube Premium subscription remains the required option.

To remind you, the Premium Lite subscription is priced at Rs. 89 per month.
