Airtel deploys mobile connectivity on Vidyasagar Setu

Airtel has announced the deployment of seamless mobile connectivity on Vidyasagar Setu (Second Hooghly Bridge), becoming the first telecommunications service provider to ensure consistent network coverage across this critical infrastructure linking Kolkata and Howrah.

Project Scope and Implementation

The initiative was executed through a public-private partnership involving the Government of West Bengal, the Public Works Department (PWD), the West Bengal Police Traffic Department, and the Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners (HRBC).

To achieve “zero drop zones” along the bridge, the project entailed specific infrastructure upgrades:

  • Fiber Optic Deployment: Airtel laid 1.3 kilometers of fiber across the entire stretch of the bridge.
  • Hardware Installation: Network antennas have been deployed on six poles to ensure uniform signal distribution.

This development addresses previous connectivity gaps on the bridge, aiming to provide uninterrupted voice and data services for the thousands of commuters who utilize this corridor daily.

Impact on Urban Mobility

Government officials have acknowledged the deployment as a necessary step for urban infrastructure. Vidyasagar Setu serves as a high-traffic daily corridor, and reliable connectivity is cited as a key factor for commuter safety and convenience.

The improved network is expected to assist commuters in using navigation apps to manage traffic, accessing digital services on the move, and maintaining communication during emergencies.

Broader Network Expansion in West Bengal

This deployment on Vidyasagar Setu is part of a wider infrastructure push by the telecom provider in the region. Over the past three years, Airtel reports having deployed more than 5,250 new network sites across West Bengal.

The company states that these investments focus on roads, bridges, transport hubs, and public spaces, aiming to deliver faster speeds and wider coverage to improve the overall network experience for customers in the state.

Commenting on this, Ayan Sarkar, CEO – Bharti Airtel, West Bengal and Odisha, said:

This deployment showcases Airtel’s engineering strength and our commitment to enabling smart infrastructure for the city. Vidyasagar Setu is one of Kolkata’s busiest transport corridors, and uninterrupted connectivity here is critical—not just for commuters, but for emergency services, traffic management, and public safety. Airtel is proud to make this possible.
