Netflix has announced the launch of a new interactive feature: real-time voting. While the streaming service has utilized rating systems such as “thumbs up/down” for over a decade, this update marks a shift toward synchronous viewer participation during live broadcasts.
Launch and Availability
The feature officially made its debut today with the premiere of Star Search, airing at 6 p.m. PT / 9 p.m. ET. During the broadcast, viewers were able to cast votes as the episode progresses alongside other viewers globally.
This functionality is designed specifically for live events and allows audience input to directly impact the show’s progression and the contestants involved, says Netflix.
Technical Requirements and Limitations
Netflix has outlined specific device requirements for accessing the voting feature. It is currently compatible with TV apps and mobile devices but excludes web browsers.
- TV/Streaming Devices: Viewers can submit votes using their standard remote control.
- Mobile App: Users can vote by tapping the screen.
- Web Browsers: Real-time voting is not available via web browsers.
Netflix advises users to utilize supported devices to participate and directs those seeking detailed technical instructions to their Tudum and Help Center pages.
Development and Future Use
Prior to this official rollout, Netflix tested an early version of the technology during Dinner Time Live with David Chang. The company stated this testing phase was used to evaluate how users interacted with the interface during a live series.
Regarding voting mechanics, the system allocates one vote per profile. Netflix has indicated that Star Search is the first of multiple planned live events that will utilize this collective decision-making tool.
