Google and Axis Bank have announced a strategic partnership to launch the Google Pay Flex Axis Bank Credit Card. Built on the RuPay network, this new co-branded credit card integrates directly with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), aiming to replicate the ubiquity of UPI transactions within a credit framework.
Flex by Google Pay
This release marks the debut of “Flex by Google Pay,” Google’s latest initiative intended to enter the co-branded credit card sector. The overarching goal of the Flex program is to simplify access to credit and digitize the application process.
According to the announcement, the card is designed to function entirely through the smartphone, minimizing the need for physical documentation.
Key Features and Functionality
The Google Pay Flex Axis Bank Credit Card introduces several digital-first features managed directly through the Google Pay app. Key specifications include:
- Digital Onboarding: The application process is fully digital. Users can apply at zero cost and, upon approval, begin transacting within minutes without the requirement for physical paperwork.
- UPI Integration on RuPay: Leveraging the RuPay network, the card supports “Scan and Pay” functionality. This allows users to utilize their credit limit for payments at millions of offline merchants and online apps that accept UPI.
- Instant Reward System: The card utilizes a reward program based on “Stars.” These points are credited instantly after transactions. Notably, the redemption value is pegged at 1 Star = ₹1, and rewards can be redeemed against future Flex transactions without waiting for the monthly statement cycle.
- Repayment Flexibility: Users can track expenses and manage bills within the Google Pay app. The interface provides options to pay the full bill or convert outstanding balances into Equated Monthly Installments (EMIs).
- In-App Security Controls: Card management features are embedded in the app, allowing users to instantly block or unblock the card and reset their PIN as needed.
Availability
Google and Axis Bank have commenced the rollout of the credit card starting today. The companies plan to expand availability to a wider user base over the coming months. Interested customers can currently join a waitlist directly via the ‘Money’ tab on Google Pay app.
