Microsoft has announced the Copilot Fall Release, introducing 12 new features designed to make its AI assistant more personal, useful, and human-centered. The update enhances Copilot’s role across Edge and Windows, offering smarter browsing, deeper personalization, and expanded health and learning capabilities.
Copilot Mode in Edge
The new Copilot Mode in Microsoft Edge transforms the browser into an intelligent companion that helps users plan, research, and complete tasks efficiently. The mode remembers past sessions, simplifies multi-step actions, and offers insights based on browsing history, but only when users explicitly opt in.
Copilot Mode anticipates user needs, assists with research, and streamlines planning while adhering to Microsoft’s security, privacy, and performance standards. Users can switch between Copilot Mode and the classic Edge experience anytime with a toggle.
Copilot Actions
The Copilot Actions in Edge Preview enables users to perform both simple and complex tasks through natural conversation or voice commands. Examples include opening websites, finding information, unsubscribing from newsletters, or making restaurant reservations without leaving the browser.
Journeys
Journeys, now available in Edge, allows users to pick up exactly where they left off. It automatically groups related browsing activities into topics for easier continuation of projects. With user permission, Copilot can also use browsing history to provide contextual suggestions, such as product or movie recommendations.
Smarter, safer AI browsing experience
Copilot Mode in Edge includes several tools for enhanced productivity and security:
- Multi-tab context: With permission, Copilot can understand all open tabs to assist with comparisons, decision-making, and planning. For example, coordinating multiple recipes for an event or generating a grocery list.
- Quick Assist: Operates within a dynamic side panel, allowing users to take actions, such as clearing cache or managing emails, without losing context.
- Streamlined new tab page: Offers a clean layout that combines chat, search, and browsing for a focused experience.
- Scareware blocker: Uses local AI to prevent full-screen scam takeovers; enabled by default on supported devices.
- Password management: Monitors passwords, provides alerts, and supports secure storage.
Microsoft ensures that user data is fully controlled, with all data handling governed by the Microsoft Privacy Statement and explicit opt-in permissions.
Copilot on Windows
On Windows 11, Copilot integration expands across the OS. Users can activate Copilot using the wake phrase “Hey Copilot” on an unlocked PC. The new Copilot home allows users to resume recent files, apps, or conversations.
Features such as Copilot Vision enable step-by-step guidance on tasks. Copilot can summarize documents, troubleshoot issues, and will soon support text-based interactions for additional flexibility.
Other New Features in Copilot Fall Release
AI that connects us
The Groups feature enables shared Copilot sessions with up to 32 participants, allowing real-time collaboration on planning, brainstorming, and study. Copilot summarizes threads, proposes options, and splits tasks to keep everyone aligned. Imagine provides a collaborative space for AI-generated ideas that users can like, remix, and adapt, fostering creative interaction.
Personalized AI
The Mico character is a customizable, expressive AI assistant that reacts visually and animates during conversations for more natural interaction. Conversation styles like “Real Talk” adapt to user tone, encourage critical thinking, and facilitate collaborative dialogue.
Memory and shared context
Copilot now supports long-term memory, storing information across sessions such as tasks, events, or goals. Users can edit or delete memories at any time.
- Connectors integrate Copilot with services including OneDrive, Outlook, Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Calendar, enabling natural language searches across accounts.
- Proactive Actions in Deep Research suggest insights and next steps based on recent activity, enhancing productivity and reducing repetitive effort.
Health, learning, and wellbeing
- Health: Copilot provides evidence-based answers from sources like Harvard Health and helps locate doctors by specialty, location, or language preference.
- Education: Learn Live enables Socratic-style guidance, using questions, visuals, and interactive whiteboards to assist in learning new topics.
