Microsoft is rolling out Paint, Snipping Tool, and Notepad app updates to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels on Windows 11. The new update adds the ability to save a paint file as a project, a Quick markup inside the snipping tool, and AI features to Notepad.
Windows 11 Apps’ Latest Features
Paint app
In the latest version of the Paint app (11.2508.361.0), the company has introduced two powerful enhancements that add more flexibility to your creative workflow. First, you can now save your creation as an editable Paint project file, allowing you to seamlessly pick up where you left off. To do this, go to the File menu and select Save as project.
The company has also added an opacity slider, giving you control over the transparency of your strokes with the Pencil and Brush tools. You can experiment with the slider—located on the left side of the canvas—alongside the size slider to create smooth blends and layered effects.
Snipping Tool
In the latest version of the Snipping Tool (11.2508.24.0), the company has added a Quick Markup feature. You can spot the Quick Markup button in the top toolbar when you initiate a screenshot by using Win + Shift + S or launching the app directly.
On the Quick Markup toolbar, you’ll find the classic pen, highlighter, and eraser tools, along with shapes and emojis to make quick edits to your image.
Notepad
Microsoft is bringing AI features to its Notepad app as well. Notepad, with the latest version 11.2508.28.0, supports AI features like Summarize, Write, and Rewrite on Copilot+ PCs, with no subscription required. As of now, the feature is restricted to the English language only.
If you have a subscription, you can seamlessly switch between local and cloud models based on your needs. If you’re not signed in or don’t have a subscription, you can use the local model to accomplish your tasks.
Availability
These new features are in the testing phase and can be accessed by Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels on Windows 11. Stable rollout is expected to happen soon.
