Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 Hands On and First Impressions

Samsung unveiled their latest generation of foldable devices for 2022 yesterday at their Galaxy Unpacked event. 5 new devices were introduced, and the most premium product among them was the Galaxy Z Fold4. We got a chance to check out the device at the event, and gathered some thoughts. Here is our first impressions from our hands-on experience.

The design of the Galaxy Z Fold4 has largely remained the same as compared to the Galaxy Z Fold3. The form factor is still the same, and it feels nearly the same to hold in the hand. Opening the device is still easiest with two hands, and the ergonomics are unchanged. It is apparently 8gms lighter, but I couldn’t notice any real difference in my hand.

At first glance, it is hard to notice any differences, but there are some. The front outer display is slightly wider, thanks to narrower bezels. The same goes for the inner display too, giving the device’s display a slightly shorter and wider look. The hinge is ever so slightly shorter and tighter against the body, and edges all around are a little more squared off. I would say all of these changes are small refinements that improve the overall feel of the device.

The fingerprint sensor and the volume rocker are on the right edge, and there are stereo speakers on the top and bottom edge. For ports, there is a single USB Type-C port and no 3.5mm audio jack, which isn’t surprising. Thankfully, the IPX8 water resistance remains.

Coming to display, the outer display has a 6.2-inch 23.1:9 HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with a resolution of 2316 x 904 pixels. The refresh rate can switch between 48Hz and 120Hz, and it is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+.

The larger inner display has been upgraded this time around, with a 7.6-inch QXGA+ 21.6:18 Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel that has a resolution of 2176 x 1812 pixels. The refresh rate can switch between 1Hz and 120Hz and it can reach a maximum brightness of 1300 nits.

Coming to internals, the Galaxy Z Fold4 is powered by the latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 Mobile Platform with Adreno next-gen GPU. All models come with 12GB of RAM and there are three storage options – 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. Samsung has reportedly made a number of improvements to the OneUI software experience for better multitasking and performance. We will definitely test out these claims in our detailed review of the device.

Lastly, Samsung has improved the camera system on the Galaxy Z Fold4. The primary rear camera is now a 50MP sensor with OIS and VDIS. Along with this, there is a 12MP ultra-wide sensor and a 10MP Telephoto sensor that has 3X optical zoom. The selfie cameras include a 10MP sensor in the front and a 4MP sensor under the display. There are a couple of new features such as Nightography too, which was first introduced with the Galaxy S22 series.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 comes in Graygreen, Phantom Black and Beige colours, and will launch in India soon.
