Reliance Jio to offer free unlimited WiFi at 6 stadiums for T20 Worldcup

Reliance Jio will offer free unlimited WiFi service at 6 stadiums during the upcoming T20 WorldCup. Dubbed as Jio Net, the service will be available at Ferozshah Kotla,  Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, Mumbai’s Wankhede and Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore and stadiums in Mohali and Dharmashala.

The company has installed around 650 access points at Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi and the network is supported by 100 Gbps backhaul to ensure 15 Mbps speed. In addition, there are about from 50 small cells for supporting 4G services once it is commercially launched. Meanwhile, in case of other stadiums, an average of 600 access points for Wi-Fi services has been established, while around 1,100 access points have been installed in Kolkata’s Eden Garden stadium. The service is aimed at offering WiFi for about 40,000 spectators during the matches.

Users will have to generate a one time password (OTP) after giving their mobile number to access the services. At present, Jionet WiFi service is available at few airports and tourist spots across major cities in the country. The company is in discussions with various state governments to offer free Wifi services across universities and other public areas. Reliance launched 4G LTE services for its employees in December last year. It is however not known,  when the company plans a commercial 4G roll out. Just last month, Reliance teamed up with eight global telecom companies with an aim to bring better products and services to customers everywhere.
