MediaTek opens new R&D facility in Bengaluru, plans to invest US$ 200 million in India

MediaTek Inc., one of the world’s leading SoC makers has launched a new Research & Development (R&D) facility at Bengaluru, India. The company would develop innovative solutions for wireless communications and concentrate on core segments like connectivity & home entertainment devices in the facility. It also said the it would invest US$ 200 million for expansion in India, during the course of the next few years.

It would enhance R&D capability in India for development of affordable solutions for the rising Super-mid market with this investment. The new facility will work in collaboration with other globally located R&D facilities of MediaTek to design solutions that combine hardware, software and services, said the company.

The new R&D facility is approximately 70000 sq ft in size and is located at Tech Park, along the Outer Ring Road in Bengaluru. It plans to build a workforce of over 100 professionals by the end of this year. MediaTek has partnered with most Indian handset manufacturers already. It aims to  diversify its operations in the country by enhancing connectivity and home entertainment segments. It already has R&D facility in NOIDA (NCR Region).

Regarding MediaTek’s expansion plans for India, Grant Kuo, Managing Director, MediaTek India, said,

MediaTek Bangalore R&D center would cater to the growing needs of millions of consumers in emerging Super-mid market, especially in the South-East Asian region. MediaTek is one of the few companies that provide a whole spectrum of technologies, and with the launch of Bengaluru center, we are looking to expand into our other set of businesses in India, besides mobile communications.

Talking about the new R&D facility, Akshay Aggarwal, General Manager, MediaTek Bangalore, said

We are delighted to be a part of the growing technology ecosystem in Bengaluru. By year-end, we plan to build a workforce of over 100 professionals with strong expertise in the IC design industry, and over the next few years, we look to grow to over 500 in number. The Bengaluru center for excellence will develop exciting new products and applications, enabling India to harness growth opportunities in emerging technologies like LTE and IoT.
