Twitter doubles Tweet limit to 280 characters for everyone

Twitter back in September has launched 280 character limit per Tweet for few users, and today the company has made it official by launching it for almost everyone based on the results and goals it achieved during the initial phase.

The 280 character limit is aimed at drawing more user engagement and more users on social media, and it is the first time the character limit has been capped since Twitter was found 11 years ago. According to the data collection, historically, 9% of Tweets in English hit the character limit which was a challenge to fit a thought into a single Tweet which required a lot of time in editing, modify and sometimes even abandoning the tweet without sending.

With the new 280 character limit, this issue can be drastically reduced, and the number dropped to only 1% of Tweets running up against the limit according to the data collected by Twitter. Talking about the Twitter’s brevity, Aliza Rosen, Product Manager Twitter said that only 5% of Tweets sent were longer than 140 characters and only 2% were over 190 characters. As a result, the reading experience won’t change substantially.

During the initial phase for the people who got the 280 character limit spent more time experimenting the new addition thus gaining more engagement like likes, retweets, and more followers. People have reported that the new character limit gave more satisfaction with the way they expressed themselves on Twitter says, Rosen.

The changes will be rolling out in all languages except Japanese, Korean, and Chinese, in which space limitations have not been an issue.

Aliza Rosen, Product Manager Twitter said,

We are making this change after listening and observing a problem our global community was having (it wasn’t easy enough to Tweet!), studying data to understand how we could improve, trying it out, and listening to your feedback. We’ll continue listening and working to make Twitter easier for everyone while making sure we keep what you love.
