iOS code references suggests Apple may be working on Li-Fi Wireless data technology

It looks like Apple is experimenting with Li-Fi wireless technology for future iPhones. New iOS code references were spotted by Chase Fromm, a Twitter user and later confirmed by Apple Insider.

The iOS code references in the latest versions of iOS 9.1 firmware mentions “Li-Fi Capability” which is a light-based wireless data technology that transfers data over the visual spectrum rather than via radio waves. The Li-Fi technology uses pulses of light to transmit data and it is being touted as a long-term replacement for Wi-Fi. Li-Fi uses visible light to transmit data and it is 100 times faster than a standard Wi-Fi connection.

The Li-Fi speeds of 224 gigabits per second is fast enough to download multiple HD movies in less than two seconds, as per a testing. Currently, the Li-Fi technology is in an early stage of development and the reference of the code in iOS 9 could mean that Apple is merely experimenting with the Li-Fi technology.
