Xiaomi HyperOS 4 Global Beta roll out begins

Xiaomi recently announced Xiaomi HyperOS 4, the next version of its operating system, and now the company has opened the Global Beta Program ahead of the stable release.

The company said HyperOS 4 builds on the previous generation with changes to system performance, the user interface, AI features, and cross-device functionality.

Performance improvements

Over the past three generations, Xiaomi HyperOS has progressed from architectural reconstruction to system-level refinement through micro-architecture scheduling and compiler technology. With HyperOS 4, Xiaomi has focused on instruction-level and memory-level tuning while refactoring fixed overheads within the native application layer.

These changes help maintain performance under heavy graphical rendering and new animation loads while reducing frame drops and heat generation.

Xiaomi HyperCore

At the core of these improvements is Xiaomi HyperCore, the company’s foundational core technology suite. HyperOS 4 adds two key technologies: Precision Workload Scheduling and Memory Preloading.

Precision Workload Scheduling

Workload evaluation provides real-time diagnostic visibility into thread-level instruction execution to identify power bottlenecks. The evaluation model has been upgraded to use instruction counts as the primary metric, with more than 100 high-frequency daily scenarios analyzed to identify anomalous task loads.

For camera photography, the system provides a five-layer instruction-count breakdown. Precision Workload Scheduling also analyzes high-power task processes end-to-end to reduce:

  • Redundant instructions
  • Abnormal memory usage
  • Background service wake-ups

The company reported:

  • 14.7% reduction in total instruction counts
  • 27.7% reduction in first-party app scenarios
  • 9.6% reduction in third-party app scenarios
Memory Preloading

Memory-intensive tasks can experience stalls when data is not delivered in time. Xiaomi also said memory fragmentation can contribute to frame drops during continuous use.

Rather than waiting for defragmentation during memory allocation, HyperOS 4 learns the memory requirements of each app launch and performs defragmentation in advance.

When the camera is launched, for example, the system proactively reserves memory for:

  • Viewfinder preview
  • Lens switching

According to Xiaomi, the same device has 33% more available memory after eight hours of continuous use with HyperOS 4 compared with HyperOS 3.

Xiaomi HyperOS Application Runtime Environment

Xiaomi has developed the Xiaomi HyperOS Application Runtime Environment to reduce the memory overhead of stock execution models. These models use the same resource allocation approach across processes, with each process loading a full runtime environment that occupies 10MB to 20MB of dedicated memory. More than 100 application processes typically run after boot, creating cumulative overhead.

The new runtime environment is tailored for first-party applications and provides two execution paths:

  • State-Driven UI Execution Path: Runs on 100% direct machine code.
  • On-Demand Capability Execution Path: Bypasses fixed runtime overhead while retaining the essential base capabilities required by system applications.

First-party app optimizations

HyperOS 4 includes full code rewrites for System Launcher, Gallery, and Weather using a higher-efficiency programming language. Xiaomi has also rebuilt the supporting architecture, system frameworks, developer tools, debugging utilities, and automated testing infrastructure, with 100% compatibility verification.

The new programming language eliminates micro-stutters caused by stock garbage collection.

System Launcher

For System Launcher, hot launch time across 30 consecutive app launches decreased by 9.4% after nine hours of continuous use.

Multitasking improvements cover scenarios involving:

  • Landscape apps
  • Floating landscape windows
  • Apps that switch between different orientations
Gallery

For Gallery, Xiaomi reported:

  • 90% reduction in the scan time for 10,000 photos
  • 28% lower CPU utilization
  • 32% lower memory usage
  • No white blank spaces during rapid thumbnail scrolling
Weather

The Weather app uses real-time physics rendering for its animations. Across demanding sessions, the combined use of Precision Workload Scheduling, Memory Preloading, and the application runtime environment reduced dropped frames by 30.3%, according to Xiaomi.

Interface changes

HyperOS 4 continues Xiaomi’s Alive Aesthetics design philosophy across three areas:

  • Texture
  • Light and Shadow
  • Spatial Depth

The new Soft Light Glass system texture combines diffused light, organic gradients, and translucent layers. Dynamic lighting effects also respond to interactions such as rearranging home screen icons and toggling the Control Center.

Lock screen

The lock screen adds flexible clock scaling and variable typography. Users can:

  • Scale the clock along two axes
  • Switch between single- and dual-line layouts
  • Position the clock across the canvas
  • Use integrated font styles with the Soft Light Glass texture

Notification stacking

Notification stacking uses multi-layered cards, with a compact stack at the bottom of the lock screen. A swipe expands the full notification feed.

Home screen folder resizing

Users can resize home screen folders between:

  • 1×1
  • 1×2
  • 2×1
  • 2×2
  • 4×2

Unified layouts

Redesigned first-party apps use optimized visual hierarchies and unified floating frames. Their layouts adapt to different screen ratios across compact smartphones, larger smartphone displays, and tablets.

Xiaomi HyperAI features

HyperOS 4 expands Xiaomi HyperAI with text, voice, and visual comprehension features across system applications.

AI Voice Note

AI Voice Note, integrated into the Notes app, transcribes voice memos into structured entries. Natural-language queries can also be used to refine vague ideas and generate structured outputs such as:

  • Mind maps
  • Actionable to-do lists
AI Speech Recognition

The upgraded AI Speech Recognition feature lets users insert visual markers during audio recording. During playback, the system generates an interactive timeline using:

  • Visual markers
  • Standard timestamps

It also supports intelligent silent-segment skipping for navigating recordings.

Xiaomi Smart Hub

The Xiaomi Smart Hub provides a central interface for cross-device interconnectivity and device management. HyperOS 4 updates its layout to provide access to connected devices and automation routines.

Users can:

  • Pin frequently used devices and automation routines to the top of Xiaomi Smart Hub
  • Access pinned devices and routines through the Control Center
  • Switch between different device lists when managing multiple smart homes or properties

Global Beta availability

The Xiaomi HyperOS 4 Global Beta Program is officially open, with registration available through Xiaomi Community. The update is gradually rolling out to registered participants for the initially listed models.

Users can manually check for updates by going to Settings > About phone and tapping on the version number. If a new version is available, they can proceed with the upgrade.

The company said system performance and the overall experience will continue to be fine-tuned during the beta stage, while upgraded features and supported device models roll out progressively.
