NVIDIA has entered into an agreement to acquire open-source AI platform Hugging Face for approximately $12.93 billion, NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang announced.
The transaction marks one of the largest acquisitions in the artificial intelligence sector, bringing the premier repository for open-weight models under NVIDIA’s corporate umbrella.
Founded by Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf, Hugging Face has become a central hub for machine learning development. According to NVIDIA, the platform currently hosts more than 18 million developers, researchers, and creators, supporting over 3 million models, 500,000 datasets, and 1 million applications. Over 200,000 enterprises utilize its ecosystem for discovering, testing, and deploying artificial intelligence workloads.
Addressing potential ecosystem concerns regarding platform lock-in, Huang stated that Hugging Face will retain its open-access model. Developers will continue to have the flexibility to select their preferred frameworks, cloud providers, and hardware architectures.
NVIDIA confirmed that its proprietary hardware and computing platforms will not be mandatory to build, train, or deploy models through the service. Multi-cloud support and compatibility with non-NVIDIA accelerators will remain active.
NVIDIA has positioned the deal as a continuation of its ongoing investments in open weights, citing its contributions of over 500 models and 250 open datasets to the platform. By integrating NVIDIA’s capital, engineering scale, and hardware infrastructure, the company plans to enhance Hugging Face’s platform reliability, evaluation tooling, and large-scale inference capabilities.
Under the terms outlined, Hugging Face will maintain its independent branding while operating backed by NVIDIA’s engineering and distribution network.
