OpenAI has introduced its first hardware product, the Codex Micro, a keypad developed in collaboration with keyboard maker Work Louder. The device is designed specifically for controlling OpenAI’s agentic coding feature Codex. The two companies began teasing the accessory in June.
The kbd-1.0-codex-micro includes dedicated Codex controls, RGB lighting for showing agent status, a joystick for launching workflows, and a rotary encoder for adjusting reasoning levels. It also comes with the Codex Icon Keyset featuring 32 custom keycaps.
Codex Micro features
The Codex Micro includes Agent Keys with live RGB status indicators from Codex. The lighting shows the current state of agents, including whether they are idle, have unread chats, are thinking, require user approval, or have encountered an error.
The RGB status indicators include:
- White: Idle
- Green: Unread chat
- Blue: Thinking
- Peach: Need user approval / Question
- Red: Error
The keypad includes a joystick that can launch Codex workflows such as reviewing a pull request, debugging an error, and refactoring code. It also features command keys that provide shortcuts for Codex actions, including accepting or rejecting actions, push-to-talk, starting a new chat, and other controls. A rotary dial allows users to adjust the reasoning level in Codex.
