Roblox Corporation has announced the rollout of its Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts, introducing age-based experiences for users under 16. The system is designed to adjust protections as users grow, using age verification to assign account types automatically.
The update integrates age checks, account settings, content ratings, ongoing moderation, and parental controls into a single framework. Roblox also states that users under 16 will continue to access the majority of their existing games, while users aged 16 and above will see no changes to their current experience.
Users move through different account tiers automatically based on age verification.
Age-based account system
Roblox Kids Accounts (Ages 5–8)
- Strongest default safety settings
- Access limited to Minimal and Mild-rated content
- Chat disabled by default
- Curated and tightly moderated game catalog
Roblox Select Accounts (Ages 9–15)
- Access to games rated up to Moderate content
- Chat settings vary by age and region
- Additional safeguards for users under 16
- Excludes experiences involving sensitive issues, social hangouts, and free-form drawing features
Users transition automatically:
- Kids → Select at age 9
- Select → standard Roblox accounts at age 16
Moderation and content review system
Roblox applies enhanced safety review processes for younger users, including:
- Developer verification requirements
- Real-time evaluation of experiences
- Strengthened content review standards
These systems ensure that only approved and age-appropriate content appears in younger user catalogs.
Expanded parental controls
Roblox is expanding parental supervision tools to give parents more control and visibility, including:
- Access to gameplay activity and friend lists
- Controls for content ratings and communication settings
- Screen time limits and spending controls
- Granular game blocking options
- Direct chat management tools
- Game approval feature allowing parents to approve specific experiences outside default settings
Certain controls remain active until the child turns 16.
Safety and communication restrictions
Roblox is expanding platform-wide communication safeguards:
- Facial age checks required to access chat features
- Users without completed age verification cannot access standard accounts or chat
- Chat continues to block links, images, and videos
- Users under 16 cannot share or view links across profiles, game pages, Community pages, or the Creator Hub
- Social media links remain restricted beyond chat environments, expanding existing rules
Availability and future updates
Roblox Kids and Select accounts are now available globally, including India
- Features and content access may vary by region
- Parents can correct a child’s age if needed
- Roblox will transition to the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) framework later this year for standardized global content ratings
Speaking on the launch, Matt Kaufman, Chief Safety Officer at Roblox, said:
Children’s needs change significantly as they grow, and online experiences should evolve alongside them. With Roblox Kids and Roblox Select, we’re creating age-based protections designed to support younger users at different stages, while giving parents tools to personalize the experience for their family.
