Apple and Google roll out end-to-end encryption beta for cross-platform RCS

Apple and Google have collaborated on a cross-industry initiative to implement end-to-end encryption (E2EE) within Rich Communication Services (RCS). This update aims to improve the security and privacy of the cross-platform messaging standard, which serves as the modern replacement for traditional SMS.

Beta Rollout and Availability

The encrypted RCS messaging feature begins its beta rollout today. Access is currently available to iPhone users operating on iOS 26.5 via supported carriers, as well as Android users utilizing the latest version of the Google Messages application.

Functionality and User Experience

The implementation of end-to-end encryption ensures that messages remain unreadable to third parties while in transit between devices.

To verify the security status of a conversation, users will see a visual indicator:

  • Android: Google Messages users will see the same lock icon previously used for internal RCS chats.
  • iOS: iPhone users will also see a new lock icon within their RCS chat interface.

The encryption protocol is enabled by default. It will be automatically applied over time to both newly initiated and existing RCS conversations, requiring no manual opt-in from users.

Historical Context

Prior to this cross-platform integration, both companies offered end-to-end encryption exclusively within their own operating ecosystems. Apple’s iMessage has historically utilized E2EE for communication between Apple devices.

Similarly, Google Messages has supported E2EE for communications strictly between Android devices. This joint effort extends those existing security standards to bridge the gap between the two distinct platforms.
