Canon continues 23-year reign in interchangeable-lens camera market

Canon has reported that its interchangeable-lens digital cameras, including DSLR and mirrorless models, have retained the No. 1 global market share for 23 consecutive years, from 2003 through 2025.

EOS Series and Technology

The EOS series is based on the principles of “Speed, Comfort, and High Image Quality.” Canon has developed proprietary components such as CMOS image sensors, DIGIC image processors, and interchangeable lenses to support this system. The product lineup spans high-performance professional models to entry-level cameras, complemented by 113 RF and EF lenses to meet diverse photography and videography requirements.

Milestones in Digital SLR and Mirrorless Cameras

Canon entered the digital SLR market with the EOS Digital Rebel / EOS 300D / EOS Kiss Digital in September 2003, offering a compact, lightweight design at a competitive price. This launch contributed to Canon securing top global market share and marked the beginning of the DSLR era.

Subsequent innovations include the professional EOS-1D series and the EOS 5D series, the latter of which supported video recording capabilities on DSLR cameras.

In October 2018, Canon introduced the EOS R System, expanding the range of mirrorless cameras. Key milestones include:

  • EOS R5 (July 2020): First camera with 8K video recording.
  • EOS R1 (November 2024): Combines advanced autofocus, high image quality, and reliability for professional use.
  • EOS R50 V (May 2025): APS-C mirrorless model with video functions, first in the EOS V series.
  • EOS R6 Mark III (November 2025): Full-frame mirrorless model providing high performance for advanced amateur users.

In 2025, Canon also released seven RF lenses, further extending the EOS R System.

Continued Market Leadership

Through ongoing product updates and expansion of the EOS R System, Canon has maintained its leading position in the global market for interchangeable-lens digital cameras for 23 consecutive years.

Canon stated that it will continue to develop imaging technologies and provide products, services, and solutions that meet the varied needs of customers, supporting both daily photography and the broader photo and video culture.
