Google expands Gemini, its AI assistant in Google Maps, beyond driving directions to walking and cycling. Gemini now acts as a smart companion for pedestrians and cyclists, offering hands-free guidance, real-time suggestions, and route-based recommendations while you explore.
Gemini in navigation
- Walking guidance: Gemini can provide step-by-step support while walking. Users can ask about their current location, such as “What neighborhood am I in?” or request nearby options like “Show top-rated restaurants along my route.”
- Cycling guidance: Cyclists can receive voice-based assistance without handling their device. They can ask for estimated arrival times, check schedules, or send messages like “Text Sarah I’m 10 minutes late.”
- Driving guidance (existing): For drivers, Gemini can help locate stops, check for available EV chargers, share estimated arrival times, add events to the calendar, suggest dining options, and report traffic issues using voice commands.
- Live recommendations: Gemini uses the latest Google Maps data to give context-aware suggestions for walking, cycling, or driving routes.
Last year, Google introduced Gemini for hands-free driving, enabling users to complete multi-step tasks and report traffic incidents without touching the screen.
