Google has introduced four new features in Google Maps designed to help users save time and stay prepared during the holiday period. Announcing the update, Maryann Bright, Chief Holiday Officer, said the additions aim to make planning and exploring easier during busy outings.
Insider tips built with Gemini
Google Maps now surfaces “know before you go” tips when users search for places such as restaurants, hotels, and concert venues. These insights provide details like dress codes, parking information, reservation methods, secret menu notes, and similar guidance.
Maps uses Gemini to review information available online, including user reviews, to highlight the most relevant tips. Each insight can be tapped for additional context.
Updated Explore tab for trending places
The Explore tab has been refreshed to help users quickly find nearby trending and popular spots. By swiping up, users can view restaurants, activities, and sights that are gaining attention in their area — including recently opened cafés or local art galleries.
The tab also features curated lists from sources such as Viator, Lonely Planet, OpenTable, and local influencers like Sistersnacking.
Predicted EV charger availability for road trips
Google Maps can now predict how many EV chargers are likely to be available upon a driver’s arrival. The feature builds on existing real-time charger status from networks including Tesla Superchargers and Electrify America.
Using AI to analyze both historical and live data, Maps provides estimated charger availability to help drivers avoid queues and plan stops more efficiently.
Nickname support for local business reviews
Users can now post reviews for local businesses using a nickname and profile picture instead of their real name. This allows users to leave feedback — such as a five-star review for a bakery — without displaying their personal identity publicly.
Google notes that its review protections continue monitoring for suspicious or fake activity, and all reviews remain linked to the user’s Google Account behind the scenes.
