Meta expands AI Reels translations to Hindi and Portuguese on Facebook and Instagram

Meta has expanded its AI-powered Reels translation feature to include Hindi and Portuguese, alongside existing support for English and Spanish. The update aims to make Reels more accessible to global audiences on both Facebook and Instagram, allowing creators to share their content across multiple languages.

Inspired by Creators, Built for Community

Many creators want to reach international audiences, and their feedback guided Meta’s development of AI-powered translation tools. With Meta AI, creators can now seamlessly translate and dub their Reels, helping viewers understand content in their own language.

The feature currently supports bidirectional translations between English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Hindi, expanding access to major Reels markets worldwide.

How Meta AI Translations Work

Meta AI reproduces the sound, tone, and style of a creator’s voice while translating their Reels, so the output feels authentic and natural. Creators can also enable an optional lip-syncing feature, which aligns the translated audio with mouth movements for a more realistic viewing experience.

Translated Reels are automatically shown to viewers in their preferred language, with clear labeling — “Translated with Meta AI.”

Creator and Viewer Controls

Meta has added controls for both creators and viewers to manage their translation preferences.

  • Creators can choose to enable or disable translations, add lip-syncing, or review the translated version before publishing.
  • Viewers can turn translations on or off, or watch Reels in the original language. These options appear under the Audio and Language section in the three-dot settings menu.

Availability

Translating Reels with Meta AI is free and available to:

  • Facebook creators with 1,000 or more followers
  • All public Instagram accounts in regions where Meta AI is supported

The rollout extends Meta’s 2024 launch of Reels translations, which initially supported English ↔ Spanish. The addition of Hindi and Portuguese broadens access for creators and viewers across key global regions.

Meta’s Goal of Accessibility

Meta says the ongoing expansion of AI translations reflects its goal to make content accessible for everyone. The feature helps creators grow diverse audiences by removing language barriers and maintaining the authenticity of their own voice in translated Reels.
