Google App for Windows brings Spotlight-like search

Google has introduced a new experimental application for Windows, currently available through its Labs program. The app aims to provide users with a faster way to search for information directly from their desktop.

The application allows users to initiate a search without switching windows or interrupting their current task, just like Spotlight on macOS. By using the keyboard shortcut Alt + Space, users can instantly search for a variety of information. This includes local computer files, installed applications, files stored on Google Drive, and content from the web.

A key feature of the app is the integration of Google Lens. This allows users to select and search for any content on their screen. The functionality can be used to translate images or text and can also be used to assist with homework problems. Additionally, the app offers an AI Mode for more detailed, AI-powered responses, which includes the ability to ask follow-up questions and access helpful links.

The new app is being positioned as a tool for quickly finding information and is accessible with a simple keyboard shortcut.

Availability

Google App for Windows is currently available only in the US through Google Labs currently, and is expected to expand to other countries soon.
