WPC launches Qi2 25W wireless charging standard

WPC has released a new iteration of its Qi wireless charging standard, version 2.2.1, now named Qi2 25W. This update provides faster charging speeds and expanded support, including the addition of leading Android smartphones to the Qi2 ecosystem.

Qi2 25W standard: Enhanced Charging Speed

The Qi2 25W standard raises wireless charging power capacity to 25 watts, increasing charging rates by nearly 70% compared to the original Qi2’s 15 watts, which launched in November 2023. According to research by WPC, consumers most frequently request faster wireless charging as a key improvement.

Certification and Market Presence
  • Recently, 14 products such as transmitters and receivers successfully passed the Qi2 25W certification during a pilot phase.
  • The certification process is now open to hundreds of additional devices, including manufacturers like Belkin, which obtained Qi2.2 certification earlier this month.
  • Since its introduction almost two years ago, the Qi2 standard has been adopted by over 1.5 billion certified devices globally.

Expansion to Android Devices

For the first time, alongside Apple iPhones, several prominent Android smartphone models are joining the Qi2 wireless charging ecosystem. Users continue to benefit from the magnetic attachment feature and a broad range of compatible accessories.

Unified High-Speed Wireless Charging Protocol

Before Qi2, fast wireless charging solutions were often proprietary, resulting in compatibility issues and uneven charging experiences. Qi2 25W represents the first industry-wide standard supporting high-speed wireless charging that ensures consistent interoperability.

Industry Insight

Fady Mishriki, Chair of the WPC Board, highlighted the strong momentum behind Qi2 25W, stating,

This new standard offers nearly 70% more charging power than its predecessor, delivering a noticeable improvement for consumers.

He also remarked on the unprecedented volume and variety of devices currently queued for certification.

Speaking about the launch, Paul Struhsaker, Executive Director of the WPC, said:

When Qi2 was introduced, beyond the immediate gains in charging speed and power efficiency, we highlighted that its magnetic power profile would lay the groundwork for even faster and more advanced wireless charging. With Qi2 25W delivering significantly improved speed and efficiency, we expect broader adoption and faster uptake of the standard across devices.
