Telegram today launched its first global contest for content creators, offering a $50,000 (Rs. 42.8 lakh approx.) prize pool. The competition invites participants worldwide to create short videos highlighting Telegram’s history of introducing innovative messaging features.
Pavel Durov, Telegram’s CEO and co-founder, stated on his channel that the contest responds to competitive challenges. He claimed WhatsApp has run smear campaigns against Telegram, adding, “No more playing nice — gloves off now.”
Durov noted the contest aims to inform WhatsApp users about Telegram’s advancements, which he believes are often replicated later by WhatsApp in “watered-down” forms.
The company said the contest focuses on Telegram’s role in shaping messaging technology. Features like file sharing, channel broadcasting, customizable interfaces, and bot integration, many now industry standards, should inspire entries. Telegram noted these tools were introduced years before competitors like WhatsApp adopted similar ones.
To assist creators, Telegram published a list of 30 key features it pioneered, available on its official Design channel. Durov mentioned this list is not complete, as Telegram offers additional features still absent on WhatsApp, which would require “dozens of slides” to cover. He added that Telegram isn’t concerned about WhatsApp catching up, stating, “We’re too far ahead.”
