WhatsApp said to be working on its own ‘People nearby’ share feature

WhatsApp is working on a new feature for file sharing with nearby users, according to a report from WABetaInfo. Beta testers will soon have the option to easily share files using WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.2.20 or later.

To initiate file sharing, both users will need to open a specific section, and shaking the device will generate a share request for a controlled exchange. The report emphasizes that the sharing process is end-to-end encrypted, ensuring security. Phone numbers will be hidden for added privacy, allowing users to comfortably share files with individuals not on their contact list.

This security measure extends the protection of file exchanges beyond WhatsApp chats and into unfamiliar network environments. Regarding availability, the file-sharing feature is currently in development and may be included in a future app update.

However, details regarding potential restrictions on file size, type, or quantity remain unclear. It is also uncertain when the feature will be introduced to the stable version of the app. We’ll have to wait for more details once the feature rolls out officially.

This development follows Google’s announcement at CES 2024 that Nearby Share has been renamed Quick Share. Google has collaborated with Samsung to combine both solutions into a unified cross-Android solution under Quick Share.
