Google buys online polling service start-up Polar

Google has acquired Polar, an online polling company for an undisclosed sum. Polar is a startup that allows anyone to create a visual poll for their website or app.

As a result of the acquisition, Polar will shut down at the end of the year and the founder and mobile design expert Luke Wroblewski  along with a handful of employees will join Google+ team. Since its inception two years ago, Polar has served more than half a billion polls in the past eight months and had 1.1 million unique voters in September, said Wroblewski in the blog.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Luke Wroblewski and the talented Polar team to Google. They’ll be working with our designers and engineers to help us make G+ as beautiful and simple to use as possible, especially on mobile devices.”

said Dave Besbris, Google’s VP of engineering for Google+ in a post.

Polar’s service includes both a mobile app that allows users to create and participate in polls, as well as services for web publishers. User who are using Polar and want to save an archive can request a copy from the company’s site.
