YouTube has announced a change to how it counts public views across the platform. A view will be counted the moment a video begins playing, from the very first frame. The new standard will apply globally across all YouTube video formats.
YouTube updates public view counting
YouTube previously used multiple view-counting systems across different video formats. The platform updated its view-counting method for Shorts last year and will now apply the same standard to other video formats.
YouTube said it has heard from creators who want to eliminate confusion between different view metrics and better understand their overall exposure. With the new counting method, creators will likely see their total public view counts increase faster.
Engaged views remain in YouTube Analytics
YouTube will retain the original view metric under the name “Engaged views.” It will remain available in YouTube Analytics > Advanced Mode, allowing creators to see how many viewers choose to continue watching their videos.
The key view-related metrics will include:
- New public view metric: Counted when a video begins playing, starting from the first frame.
- Engaged views: The original view metric retained in YouTube Analytics > Advanced Mode.
No change to monetization or YPP eligibility
The change will not affect creator earnings or how creators become eligible for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Creator earnings will continue to be based on “Engaged Shorts views” and “Engaged Watch Hours,” which are available in YouTube Analytics > Advanced Mode.
There is also no change to YPP eligibility. YouTube is updating the terminology used for its YPP entry requirements:
- Qualified Shorts views: Previously called “valid public Shorts views.”
- Qualified watch hours: Previously called “valid public watch hours.”
Availability
The new public view metric will take effect globally across all YouTube video formats starting August 24, 2026. From that date, it will be applied wherever views are shown on YouTube.
