Garmin fēnix 9 and fēnix 9 Pro multisport GPS smartwatches announced

Garmin has introduced the fēnix 9 and fēnix 9 Pro multisport GPS smartwatches. Both models add Garmin Epic and new stamina tracking features, while the fēnix 9 Pro also adds a titanium case, solar-charging options and satellite and LTE connectivity.

Garmin fēnix 9

The fēnix 9 features an AMOLED display that is twice as bright as its predecessor, along with a scratch-resistant sapphire lens, leakproof buttons and a dive rating of up to 40 meters. It is available in 43mm, 47mm and 51mm sizes.

Garmin Epic in Garmin Connect lets users group activities recorded over several days, weeks or months into an “Epic.” This can cover activities such as backpacking trips, cycling stage races and strength training plans. Users can view health and performance data from the selected period, add photos and share the Epic with friends and family.

New stamina tracking features include stamina zones and a stamina curve, showing how endurance changes over time based on fitness gains and training history. These metrics help users adjust their training and pace during an activity.

For indoor rowing, the watch provides VO2 Max and power curve data to evaluate progress, set goals and adjust workout intensity. Its expanded rucking features allow users to:

  • Change pack weight during an activity
  • Follow GORUCK workouts directly on the watch
  • Set target metrics such as calories burned with up to 100kg of pack weight

The fēnix 9 has built-in routable maps, 50% more RAM than the fēnix 8 and an updated map engine. Map panning is up to 30% faster, while the new perspective view adds more detail both close-up and farther away to help users anticipate upcoming sections of a route.

The watch has 64GB of memory, allowing users to download twice as many maps compared with the fēnix 8 and store up to 7,000 songs.

Garmin fēnix 9 Pro

The fēnix 9 Pro is the first fēnix smartwatch with a titanium watch case. Garmin uses nano-molding technology to combine metal and plastic at the molecular level, reducing the overall thickness while keeping the watch lightweight.

The AMOLED displays offer up to 3,000 nits of brightness. The 51mm model has a 1.5-inch AMOLED display, which is 15% larger than the fēnix 8 display without increasing the case size.

Select Pro models feature solar-charging displays that offer weeks of battery life. The integrated LED flashlight adds a green light mode to preserve night vision.

Satellite and LTE connectivity

Select fēnix 9 Pro watches support inReach connectivity for calling, texting and SOS functions without a phone. With an active inReach plan, users can also receive emergency assistance through the 24/7 staffed Garmin Response coordination center.

The inReach and LTE features include:

  • LiveTrack: Sends notifications through the Garmin Messenger app when a user starts an activity and allows selected contacts to follow it.
  • Messaging: Lets users send messages to pre-selected recipients.
  • Garmin Locate: Uses LTE to let selected contacts view the user’s location through the Garmin Messenger app.
  • Weather: Sends forecasts for a specific location directly to the watch through satellite connectivity, in addition to LTE.

InReach connectivity is available on fēnix 9 Pro models in 43mm, 47mm and 51mm sizes.

ComfortFit bands

ComfortFit accessory bands are available for the fēnix 9 and fēnix 9 Pro. The fabric bands use a split-weave design combining stretch, durability, softness and moisture resistance, with QuickFit functionality for adjusting and replacing the bands.
