Google Wallet expands TSA PreCheck Touchless ID availability for travelers

Google Wallet is expanding support for TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, a biometric system that allows eligible travelers to pass through airport security using facial comparison instead of presenting physical ID or boarding passes. The feature is being introduced through a partnership with the Transportation Security Administration.

The integration makes Google Wallet the first digital wallet to support TSA PreCheck Touchless ID and aims to simplify how eligible travelers move through airport security.

What TSA PreCheck Touchless ID does

TSA PreCheck Touchless ID uses secure facial comparison to verify a traveler’s identity at security checkpoints. Once enrolled, travelers can move through TSA PreCheck lanes without needing to fumble for a physical ID or boarding pass at the checkpoint.

The system is currently available at select airports and supported by a limited number of airlines, requiring manual passport data upload for each airline.

How Google Wallet changes the process

With the new integration, Google Wallet reduces manual steps by connecting digital ID, boarding pass, and TSA enrollment in one flow. Eligible travelers can opt in directly from their boarding pass instead of managing separate airline-based enrollment.

This removes the need to repeatedly upload passport information and simplifies eligibility across participating airlines.

How to set up Touchless ID in Google Wallet

Eligible users can enable the feature during flight check-in through Google Wallet. The process is tied to the boarding pass and requires explicit user approval.

  • Add a digital ID using passport information in Google Wallet, if not already created
  • Check in for a flight and save the boarding pass to Google Wallet
  • Tap “Get started” if the option appears on the boarding pass
  • Approve secure sharing of identity and trip details with TSA
  • Receive confirmation and see a Touchless ID indicator on the boarding pass

Once confirmed, the traveler can use the Touchless ID lane at airport security.

Privacy and security

The system is designed so that identity data is shared only after explicit opt-in. Users must authenticate using biometric verification, PIN, or device unlock before approval.

Digital IDs are encrypted and stored on the device, and users retain control over when information is shared with TSA.

Why this matters

The integration reflects a broader shift toward digital identity systems in air travel, where mobile wallets are increasingly used for storing and verifying travel credentials. By combining biometric authentication with digital IDs, the system reduces reliance on physical documents and streamlines identity verification at airport checkpoints.

According to Atri Chandramouli, Product Manager, Google Wallet, the goal is to simplify secure travel experiences while keeping user control central to the process.

Availability

TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is currently available at select airports in the United States and supported by participating airlines under the TSA PreCheck program. Google Wallet’s integration is rolling out over the coming weeks.
