The Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processor refresh has prompted ASUS to update their entire laptop lineup for India. Leading the charge is the new ASUS Zenbook S14 (UX5406AA), a premium ultraportable aimed at professionals and on-the-go users. It pairs the new Intel Core Ultra 9 chip with a 3K OLED display and the brand’s signature Ceraluminum chassis. ASUS promises top-notch performance, significantly improved battery life, and military-grade durability, all within a strikingly slim chassis. Is it worth the premium asking price? We put it through its paces to find out.
Design and Build Quality
The Zenbook S14 cuts a professional and modern figure with its clean lines and an elegant logo on the lid. The exterior is largely minimalist, save for one standout design element: the geometric grille sitting above the keyboard. It features 2,715 CNC-machined holes that double as cooling vents. The pattern is reminiscent of the cheese-grater front on Apple’s Mac Pro, though with much finer holes.
The laptop is available in two colours, Scandinavian White and Antrim Gray. We have the Antrim Gray variant with us. The colour carries a premium subtlety to it, and the matte finish adds to the professional look.
The chassis is CNC-machined from Ceraluminum, a proprietary material developed by ASUS. Aluminium is put through a ceramization process to create it, resulting in a surface that resists scratches, smudges and everyday wear well. Fingerprint resistance is also commendable. In our time with the laptop, the exterior finish held up without any issues.
At just 1.1 cm thick and 1.2 kg, the Zenbook S14 is genuinely easy to carry around. The chassis feels rigid and inspires confidence, which is backed by its MIL-STD-810H certification. Both the lid and keyboard deck show minimal flex. The hinge is weighted slightly heavier than ideal, which means one-finger lid opening is not possible. Overall though, the Zenbook S14 offers a design and build quality that is competitive with any Windows laptop at this price, if not better.
Display and Audio
The Zenbook S14 impresses on the display front, courtesy of ASUS’s Lumina OLED technology. It features a 14-inch OLED panel with a 2880 x 1800 resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio, 0.2ms response time and a 120Hz refresh rate. Peak brightness reaches 1100 nits in HDR, with a Delta E of less than 1 and full 100% DCI-P3 colour space coverage. It is also VESA Certified DisplayHDR True Black 1000, Pantone Validated and TÜV Rheinland certified.
The display experience is simply fantastic. ASUS has offered OLED panels in their Zenbook lineup for years, and each generation seems to raise the bar. The resolution is well-suited for a 14-inch screen, and the 16:10 aspect ratio is a welcome addition for productivity work. Being OLED, you get deep blacks and richly saturated colours that make content consumption a real treat, particularly with HDR material. The high colour accuracy and support for multiple colour spaces also make it viable for colour-critical work.
OLED inherently delivers excellent motion clarity. Paired with the 120Hz refresh rate, the result is a notably smooth visual experience. Gaming isn’t the Zenbook S14’s primary purpose, but the display holds up well if you choose to indulge.
On longevity, ASUS has included several tools to guard against OLED pixel burn-in. The company also offers a free display replacement for any burn-in that occurs within the warranty period, which is a reassuring added value.
The Zenbook S14 carries a 4-speaker system with Harman Kardon certification. Two tweeters and two woofers work together to produce a reasonable surround effect, and Dolby Atmos support is present as well. The mids and highs come through with decent clarity, but the bass is noticeably thin. For a laptop in this price bracket, you would expect more from the audio, and it is a mild disappointment.
Performance and Benchmarks
The Zenbook S14’s standout feature is its performance, powered by Intel’s latest Core Ultra Series 3 processor. The specific chip on board is the Intel Core Ultra 9 386H, a 16-core design comprising 4 performance cores, 8 efficiency cores and 4 low-power efficiency cores. It is paired with 32GB of LPDDR5X memory running at 8533 MT/s and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD. Graphics are handled by an integrated Intel solution built into the chip.
The Panther Lake generation represents a meaningful step forward for Intel, and the Zenbook S14 demonstrates that well. The four performance cores are quick and capable in single-threaded tasks such as 3D modelling, spreadsheet work and code compilation. The efficiency cores handle background tasks and multi-threaded workloads competently while drawing considerably less power. It is an impressive combination for a laptop this slim, and ASUS’s thermal management allows the chip to run at up to 28W peak.
The integrated Intel Graphics is adequate for everyday tasks and can accelerate graphical workloads in supported applications. It can push playable framerates in games at reduced resolution and quality settings. That said, this is not a laptop you would buy for anything beyond casual gaming.
Cooling is managed by a dual-fan setup complemented by bi-layer graphite sheets and an ultra-slim vapour chamber. Under light use, the fans are quiet and unobtrusive. They get only moderately loud under full load, which is respectable for a chassis this thin. The laptop can also disable the fans entirely for completely silent operation, much like Apple’s MacBook Air.
Here are some benchmarks:
Keyboard and Trackpad
ASUS laptop keyboards are consistently good, and the Zenbook S14 is no different. ASUS has nailed the basics over the years, and it shows here. The key pitch is 19.5mm with a subtle 0.1mm dish-shaped indentation on each key for improved typing comfort. The layout is sensible, and the white backlight shines through the keys clearly. Typing feels great on this keyboard. Getting up to full speed takes no time at all.
The trackpad is generously sized at 127.0 x 79.17mm and features a glass surface. It comes with a hydrophobic coating and a PVD anti-fingerprint coating to resist oils and grime. Tracking is accurate and Windows gestures work as expected. However, the laptop uses a traditional bottom-click mechanism, which is a mild letdown at this price point.
Ports and Connectivity
Despite being an ultra-thin laptop, the Zenbook S14 is not heavily compromised on ports. The left side houses two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI 2.1 port and a 3.5mm combo audio jack. The right side holds a single USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port. The Thunderbolt 4 ports are versatile, supporting data transfer at up to 40Gbps, DisplayPort output and Power Delivery charging. An additional USB Type-A port would have been welcome for everyday convenience, but the overall port selection is reasonable for an ultraportable this slim.
Wireless connectivity is handled by the Intel WiFi 7 BE211 chip. WiFi 7 brings meaningful improvements over its predecessors, including faster speeds and better reliability in congested environments. During our testing, connections were consistently strong and stable. The laptop also supports Bluetooth 6.0, which ensures compatibility with the latest wireless peripherals.
Battery
Inside the Zenbook S14 is a large 77Wh lithium polymer battery that charges via the included 65W USB-C adapter. According to ASUS’s claims, the laptop will last up to 27 hours with local video playback. In our testing, we achieved a more modest battery life of about 10-11 hours with moderate use. This includes a lot of browsing, video playback, streaming content, and some light photo editing. While it doesn’t exactly match ASUS’s claims, a 10+ battery life is impressive for any Windows laptop. The efficiency gains in Intel’s Panther Lake CPUs are substantial and I’m glad to see the benefit in these laptops.
As mentioned before, charging is handled via the USB-C port, which is quite convenient. It can charge to 50% in about 40 minutes and a full charge takes a little over 1.5 hours.
Verdict
The ASUS Zenbook S14 (UX5406AA) is a compelling ultraportable that gets most of the important things right. The Ceraluminum chassis is genuinely premium and the build quality is excellent. The 3K OLED display is beautiful, and the Intel Core Ultra 9 386H delivers strong performance for productivity workloads. Battery life is impressive for a Windows laptop, and the port selection is adequate for most users. The keyboard is a pleasure to type on.
The audio is the one area that falls short of expectations for the price. The hinge weight and the lack of a second USB Type-A port are minor issues. These are small compromises in the grand scheme.
If you are a professional or frequent traveller looking for a slim, capable and well-built Windows laptop, the Zenbook S14 deserves serious consideration. It is one of the better ultraportables available in India right now.
