Android Auto gets major refresh with 3D Maps, Gemini Intelligence, widgets, HD video and spatial audio support

Android Auto is receiving a next-generation update focused on design refresh, improved entertainment, and expanded AI capabilities. The platform currently runs in more than 250 million compatible cars, extending Google’s phone-to-car experience across a wide global fleet.

The update also expands to cars with Google built-in, now available in 100+ models from 16 automakers, with deeper integration of apps, navigation, and AI features.

Redesigned interface with widgets and adaptive display support

Android Auto is getting a full visual redesign aimed at supporting different in-car screen formats, including ultrawide, circular, and custom layouts.

Key updates include:

  • Material 3 Expressive design with updated visuals, fonts, and animations

  • Improved clarity for turns, merges, and exits
  • Enhanced real-time road detail for navigation accuracy

Android Auto introduces an expanded entertainment experience for parked or charging use.

  • Full HD video playback in apps such as YouTube (up to 60fps on supported vehicles)
  • Seamless transition from video playback to audio-only when driving begins
  • Continued background audio support for compatible apps like podcasts
  • Designed entertainment mode for parked use in modern vehicles

Audio enhancements include spatial sound powered by Dolby Atmos in supported vehicles and apps.

Gemini Intelligence brings contextual AI assistance

A key part of the update is deeper integration of Gemini into driving workflows. Gemini is designed to provide contextual, task-based assistance while minimizing driver interaction.

Core capabilities include:

  • Voice-based assistance for messages, navigation, and tasks
  • Context-aware responses using emails, messages, and calendar data
  • Suggested replies with one-tap confirmation

Advanced functionality includes:

  • “Magic Cue,” which identifies useful details (such as addresses) from conversations and suggests responses
  • Task automation such as ordering food through apps like DoorDash using voice commands and confirmation

Expanded capabilities in cars with Google built-in

Vehicles with Google built-in receive deeper system-level integration compared to Android Auto.

Updates include:

  • Support for apps like Zoom and other meeting tools
  • More deeply integrated Gemini assistance across vehicle systems
  • Vehicle-aware responses, including dashboard warning explanations
  • Practical checks such as whether items fit in the vehicle cargo space
