YouTube has started rolling out its Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature to more users globally. The feature allows users to continue watching videos in a small floating window while using other apps on their mobile devices.

YouTube expands Picture-in-Picture (PiP)

Picture-in-Picture enables videos to continue playing in a small movable window even after exiting the YouTube app. The feature is now extending to free users for long-form, non-music content on Android and iOS, allowing multitasking without interrupting playback.

Key features

  • Video continues playing in a floating PiP window after exiting the app
  • Window can be moved and resized anywhere on the screen
  • Tap for play/pause controls and to return to the full app
  • Works while using other apps on the device
  • Activates automatically when exiting the app during playback (if enabled)

Availability and limitations

Picture-in-Picture is rolling out now and will be available to users globally over the coming months; iPhone and iPad users require iOS 15.0 or later.
