Apple is working on new Apple Intelligence-powered editing features for the Photos app across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The update expands Apple’s on-device AI capabilities beyond Clean Up by adding new image editing options.
A dedicated Apple Intelligence Tools section will be added in the Photos app editor, bringing all AI-based editing options into a single place alongside Clean Up.
Apple Intelligence photo editing tools in Photos app
- Extend – Adds generated content beyond image borders when cropping or zooming out, filling in missing background areas.
- Enhance – Automatically adjusts lighting, color, and contrast to improve image output.
- Reframe – Alters photo perspective after capture, mainly for spatial images.
- Clean Up (existing) – Removes unwanted objects but may struggle with reconstructing missing visual details.
Apple’s new tools are aimed at closing the gap with competitors such as Google and Samsung while expanding automated editing inside the Photos app. However, Extend and Reframe may face delays or limited availability due to development challenges. Clean Up is also expected to continue receiving refinements.
Availability
The Apple Intelligence editing features are expected with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, planned for fall 2026. Apple is expected to preview iOS 27 at WWDC 2026 on June 8, 2026.
