Opera has released new AI upgrades for its Android browser to align its mobile experience more closely with the capabilities of its flagship desktop browser, Opera One, which is also available on iOS. The update focuses on enabling users to provide context from websites, files, and images when interacting with AI.
New Ask AI access point in the search bar
The browser now includes an Ask AI access point directly within the search bar. Users can tap the search box and switch between traditional web search — using any available search engine — and the Ask AI option. This interface is designed to make it easier to move between web search and AI queries while browsing.
Attach files in the search bar for AI analysis
The updated search bar allows users to attach files stored on their Android device or take a picture using the device camera. Attached content can then be processed by the AI to perform tasks such as translation or explanation, with support for follow-up questions.
Steps to attach content:
- Open the Ask AI interface
- Tap the “+” icon below the input field
- Select a document, an image, or take a new picture
Use the current tab as context for AI prompts
The update also enables the AI to use the currently opened webpage as context for a query. This allows the AI to understand the content without requiring the user to manually restate details.
Steps to use page context:
- Open any webpage in Opera for Android
- Tap the three dots in the top-right corner
- Select the Ask AI option
- The current webpage attaches automatically to the chat as context
Privacy and data handling
Opera states that the AI can access only the context from the specific tab selected and cannot view information outside it.
- Page context is sent only when required to perform the requested task.
- Prompt and page context data is encrypted, stored for up to 30 days to support conversation continuity and faster processing, and then automatically deleted.
The company notes that this data is not used for AI training, advertising, or any other purpose.
Availability
The AI upgrades are now available for Opera for Android. Users who do not see the new features yet can update the browser through the Google Play Store.
