Apple introduces Final Cut Camera 2.0 with ProRes RAW and genlock support

Apple has introduced Final Cut Camera 2.0, adding ProRes RAW recording, genlock synchronization, and enhanced front camera controls for the iPhone 17 lineup.

Final Cut Camera 2.0

Final Cut Camera transforms the iPhone into a professional filmmaking tool, giving users access to settings such as white balance and manual focus. The latest features include:

Professional Video Tools on iPhone

The Version 2.0 builds on this foundation with ProRes RAW and genlock on iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, along with new manual adjustments for the Center Stage front camera across the iPhone 17 family.

ProRes RAW on iPhone 17 Pro Series

iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are the first smartphones capable of recording ProRes RAW, enabling capture of RAW sensor data for more control in post-production.

The update also adds open gate recording, which uses the full camera sensor to deliver a wider field of view at resolutions higher than DCI 4K. This provides flexibility for reframing, stabilization, and aspect ratio adjustments without loss of quality.

Post-Production With ProRes RAW

ProRes RAW combines the flexibility of RAW with the performance of ProRes. With Apple Silicon’s Media Engine, it enables faster exports and smaller, more efficient files than other RAW formats.

Upcoming updates to Final Cut Pro 11.2 (Mac) and Final Cut Pro 2.3 (iPad) will offer direct adjustments for exposure, color temperature, tint, and demosaicing on iPhone ProRes RAW footage.

Genlock Synchronization

Final Cut Camera 2.0 adds genlock support, allowing iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max to sync with other devices using a shared reference signal. This ensures frame-accurate results for multi-camera projects. A genlock API is also available for third-party developers, already supported by Blackmagic Design’s new Camera ProDock.

Center Stage Front Camera

The update works with the redesigned Center Stage front camera on iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. As stated by the company, the square sensor features a wider field of view and higher resolution, enabling video capture in both orientations without rotating the device.

Additional Features
  • Apple Log 2 support on iPhone 17 Pro for recording in ProRes or HEVC, with Log 2 LUTs available in Final Cut Pro.
  • Timecode support with Time of Day, Record Run, or external timecode for precise clip identification.
  • 200 mm Telephoto camera recording in ProRes up to 4K60 fps on iPhone 17 Pro.
Availability

Final Cut Camera 2.0 will be available later this month as a free download on the App Store. It supports iPhone Xs or newer on iOS 18.6, with ProRes RAW and genlock limited to iOS 26 and iPhone 17 Pro models.
