Apple is set to host its “Awe Dropping” event on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, revealing the next-generation iPhone 17 lineup, updated Apple Watches, AirPods Pro 3, and other accessories.
Ahead of the announcement, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shared insights on the expected launches.
iPhone 17 Series with New ‘Air’ Model
iPhone 17 Air
Gurman, speaking about the iPhone 17 Air, noted it is just 5.5 millimeters thick, about a third slimmer than the iPhone 16 Pro, but this slim form reduces battery life and limits the rear camera to a single pill-shaped lens.
The iPhone 17 Air is expected to be equipped with the A19 processor, a 6.6-inch ProMotion screen, USB-C, and eSIM-only support due to its slim frame. Gurman noted it also uses Apple’s own Wi-Fi chip and the C1 modem first introduced in the iPhone 16e.
Positioned between the base and Pro models, Gurman pointed out that the Air’s pricing may limit its appeal, since Pro models offer enhanced cameras, longer battery life, and superior performance for only slightly higher prices. He emphasized that the iPhone “Air” won’t be the “right choice” for most buyers.
iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max
The Pro models will undergo their first redesign since 2020. Gurman reported the back now features a camera module spanning the top third of the device, while the lower section doubles as a wireless charging area. Apple is returning to aluminum frames, which are lighter and dissipate heat more efficiently than the titanium used in previous Pro models.
Key enhancements for the Pro series include:
- A19 Pro processor
- Extended battery life
- 48MP telephoto lens (up from 12MP)
- Variable aperture system
- Simultaneous front-and-back video recording
- Major selfie camera improvements
iPhone 17 (Standard) and Accessories
The standard iPhone 17 retains its familiar design, but upgrades to a 6.3-inch display and adds ProMotion for the first time on a non-Pro iPhone. Qualcomm modems continue to be used for the base and Pro models.
Gurman noted that Apple is launching refreshed accessories, including a non-leather case, an iPhone 4-style bumper for the Air, and a premium cross-body strap. Color updates include light blue for the Air model (matching the M4 MacBook Air) and a new orange finish for the Pro models.
Apple Watch Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE
Apple is introducing updates to its watch lineup:
- Apple Watch Ultra 3: Returns with a slightly larger screen, S11 chip, 5G RedCap modem, and satellite messaging for emergencies. Gurman said Apple aims to compete more directly with Garmin in the high-end smartwatch segment.
- Apple Watch Series 11: Retains the Series 10 design, adds a brighter display, new colors, and refreshed bands.
- Apple Watch SE: Entry-level option remains at $249 with updated display and faster chip, serving as an affordable smartwatch for kids and beginners.
Planned health features like hypertension detection have been delayed. Gurman reported Apple is instead focusing on a paid Health+ service expected next year, including an AI health assistant.
AirPods Pro 3 with Live Translation
Apple plans to release the AirPods Pro 3, its first significant update in three years. Tests have included a smaller charging case, new pairing features, and a built-in heart rate sensor.
Gurman highlighted live conversation translation as the key software upgrade, expanding on iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 translation tools powered by Apple Intelligence.
Other Upcoming Apple Devices
- AirTag 2: Updated wireless chip enhances tracking range and precision.
- iPad Pro: Updated with M5 chip and a second front camera on the portrait side for flexible video calling.
- Vision Pro refresh: Chip upgraded to M4 or M5 with possible space black finish; lighter and more affordable versions are in development.
