Apple iPhone Air could launch in 2025, first foldable with Touch ID in 2026: Report

Apple’s upcoming iPhone roadmap points to three consecutive years of major redesigns. In a report for Bloomberg, Mark Gurman forecasts that the company will introduce a slimmer iPhone Air in 2025, launch its first foldable iPhone in 2026, and follow with a curved-glass iPhone 20 in 2027.

iPhone Air in 2025

Gurman expects Apple to replace the iPhone 16 Plus with a new iPhone Air this September. The model will focus on a thinner, lighter design, with trade-offs in other areas.

Key specifications:

  • One rear camera
  • eSIM-only, no physical SIM slot
  • Shorter battery life than Plus models
  • Apple’s first-generation in-house modem chip

According to the report, Apple plans to launch the iPhone Air with the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max, with the standard 17 similar to the iPhone 16, the Pro models featuring a redesigned back, upgraded cameras, and an orange color, and the Air possibly in light blue.

Foldable iPhone in 2026

The debut foldable iPhone, code-named V68, is forecasted for 2026 and is predicted to feature a book-style design like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold, according to Gurman.

Expected specifications:

  • Four cameras (front, inner, and dual rear)
  • eSIM-only configuration
  • Touch ID instead of Face ID
  • Apple’s second-generation C2 modem
  • In-cell touch display to reduce crease visibility and improve accuracy

Production is expected to ramp up in early 2026, with Apple testing black and white color options.

iPhone 20 in 2027

For the iPhone’s 20th anniversary, Gurman forecasts a curved-glass iPhone 20. The design will move away from the flat-edged style of recent years, featuring glass that curves around the device and aligning with Apple’s upcoming Liquid Glass-based iOS redesign.

Modem Transition
  • The iPhone Air (2025) is expected to feature Apple’s first-generation modem, also planned for the iPhone 16e.
  • The iPhone 18 Pro line (2026) is forecasted to use the C2 modem, Apple’s first chip designed to match Qualcomm’s latest standards.
Other Devices in Development

Gurman expects updates across Apple’s broader hardware lineup to include:

  • New Apple Watch models
  • Faster Vision Pro headsets
  • iPad Pro with M5 chip
  • AirPods Pro with health features, including heart-rate monitoring
  • Updated HomePod mini and Apple TV
  • A HomePod with display, launching with a new homeOS called Charismatic

Future products in development are forecasted to include display-less smart glasses, AirPods with cameras, a foldable iPad/Mac hybrid, a tabletop robot, and new home security devices.

Outlook

Apple’s 2025 lineup is expected to serve as a transition with the slim iPhone Air. The foldable iPhone in 2026 and the curved-glass iPhone 20 in 2027 are forecasted to mark the company’s most significant iPhone redesigns in years. Gurman expects these updates to represent Apple’s boldest iPhone changes since the introduction of the iPhone X.
